I bet it was more "green" than that. Chaotic looking! Probably the real battle wasn't even as neatly compact as that diorama. My mental image of Hastings is that of a battle gradually coming apart as the Normans turned the English flanks and went on to Caldbec hill, where they fought the unorganized main mass of Harold's army lurking in and near the edge of the Andredsweald forest. From that double-sited battle were spawned numerous running fights that spread out for miles. But you can't really put that into a single diorama, or a wargame for that matter. History is a lot more messy than our games generally allow for……………. |
