I'm about to place a large-ish order (around us$300) of Battle front's Team Yankee sets and I'm debating whether to order from BF direct since they have a free shipping offer on now, and risk (mostlikely) getting slapped with an import duty, or order from Sentrybox in Calgary and pay the 5%HST plus shipping. Any idea how much of a tariff should I expect given the amount I'll be ordering? |

2 or 3 months ago I ordered US$215 worth of figures from the States and had to pay CAD$45 tariff. I don't have to tell you, I was quite pissed: not long ago I had to pay nothing for the similar shipment. It almost feel like the tariffing is random. I never pay any tariff when ordering from UK. |

I recently faced the exact same quandry and decided to order from BF directly, mainly because SB was out of stock on the stuff I wanted. I have yet to get hit by a tariff from the US, but of course it is hit and miss. The exchange rate and shipping is cheaper from BF, but as you say, you run the risk of getting the hit. I thought the hit – if you get it – was just GST plus a service charge? So – it might not be much more than the difference you will pay by going through SB. The other thing to consider is whether SentryBox has your stuff in stock (you can check). If they do, then that's the way I would go – I give those guys a lot of business. My order from BF also hit something out of stock – apparently BMPs are 2-3 weeks away on backorder. So – no guarantees there either. Dave in Edmonton |

nevals – I definitely reckon the tariff is random. I more often order from the UK, and the only time I got tabbed was on a UK shipment from Foundry. Made worse by the fact that the customs morons charged the tariff on the converted CDN dollar value on the customs statement – and assumed that the converted value was actually in GBP. So they hit me with with a tariff that was about double what it should have been because they didn't read closely. Took months to get it refunded. Argh… |

I believe the policy is to ad tax & tariff for everything over C$50… CBC.ca did an article on it a while ago. |

In the UK, I still resent having import duty being charged on even quite small orders. Once we (God forbid!) leave the EU I am sure it will get even worse! |

I order two or three things a month from both the US and Europe, most orders are around $50 USD CDN but sometimes more. The only time I got hit with a tariff was an order that came to about $200 USD CDN (about $30 USD if IRC). |

It is hit and miss if you have to pay tax. The amount you pay depends on the province you live in. I get hit with 15 percent every now and then. |

It is a hit and miss game. I just got a Foundry order in for 90 pounds and it got through fine. I rarely get dinged from England. I think you got to think about it over the long haul like speeding tickets. As an aside, I don't really mind paying the HST but I really have a problem with the Canada Post brokerage fee (the Canadian government should pay that it if they want to collect the tax.) |

I think you got to think about it over the long haul like speeding tickets. That's pretty much how I feel about it. |

I ordered some storage boxes from Gamecraft for 6mm tanks, and the customs sticker called them "tank boxes". The geniuses at customs couldn't figure out what that meant, didn't bother to open the box to look, and decided I had about 10 pounds (weight) of "tank tops" in a small box and charged me the tariff rate for women's clothing… |
