Not Models. Saw these two birds at the edge of the DeKalb, IL Airport a few weeks ago. Anyone recognize them? Are they even operable aircraft or maybe just film props?

Good question. The perspective might be foreshortening the wings, but they look a little too small – short and narrow – for the size of the plane, and the engine placement is rather unique – in the wing, rather than above or below, but not in the wing root. I would have said Shorts, but all the ones I can find have multi-tail arrangement. Of course, I don't have any of my references handy. Might be an early CASA production. They tend to have boxy bodies like that. Could also be a mock up of some sort – look at the wheels. The main gear does not appear to actually retract into the sponson, unless it does so through a very complicated motion. The nosewheel also does not appear to retract. But is that a wheel on the tail boom of each aircraft? (Where a ramp should be located.) Never seen anything like that and would seem to confirm a mock up of some sort. I wouldn't think a mock-up would have N numbers though. Especially if they were intended to be some kind of military transports for a movie. Anyway, that's my musings on the subject. Hope somebody can clear up the mystery. |

Thanks CosmicBank! Looks Like Win is an aircraft procurer. I wonder who said "I need a couple of C-212's"? Odd also that they seem to be winterized and wrapped up. Maybe they bought them without having a buyer lined up? Here's the wikipedia info for the plane if anyone is interested. link Facinating aircraft that I'd never heard of before. Says its a STOL. I wonder what the takeoff distance is. It's been in production since the 70's and they're still ramping up production of more in Indonesia. |

DEA flies them along with a bunch of small countries. Looks like it may come in handy if you want to say "was not one of our planes" |
