Which brigades would you consider to be elite? I am Messing around with the old Victory Games The Civil War. Although 1 strength points is large for a brigade was wondering which ones people thought were elite? Looking for no more than 2-3 per side and not just from east |

Iron Brigade up through Gettysburg. Texas Brigade same period. Irish Brigade same period. In the western theater, Vandever's brigade. Parts were effective at Mill Springs, a minor role at Perryville, a kick ass couple of days at Chickamauga, and decent at Chattanooga. Wilder's Brigade for the Tullahoma Campaign and their performance at Chickamauga. And check out Harker's Brigade…put a hurting on those Texas boys. |

For what its worth my opinion would be as follows. In the AOP: The Irish Brigade, the Iron Brigade, and the Excelsior Brigade. At least before the draft took effect. In the ANV: The Texas Brigade, the Stonewall Brigade and Barksdale's Mississippi Brigade. Don't have enough knowledge concerning the Western theatre to render any opinions there. John Miller |

Can't really argue with any of the nominees. As pointed out above, after 1863 even the best of the best were pretty played out. |

This list should also include Confederate Missouri Brigade which fought in the West as well as Shelby's Iron Brigade from the Trans-Mississippi. Shelby's 1863 raid spawned the boast "You've heard of JEB Stuart's ride around McClellan? Hell brother, Jo Shelby rode around Missouri." |

For western units how about the 125th Ohio Infantry, "Opdycke's Tigers", they routed Hood's Texas Bde. at Chickamauga as well as plugging the breach at Franklin. |

The latest Civil War Quarterly offered a list of 'elite' units too. |
