What rules would you suggest for large late 19th C battles with a VSF twist ? Ideally with basing that is compatible with HoTT …. We tweaked the POW rules some years ago, but If there if there is another option nowadays. |

Soldiers Companion: Space 1889 Not HoTT basing, but a solid set |

I assume you mean apart from Martian Empires? Mike |

I've not read nor played it, but people speak well of Rogue Planet. Strike Legion Tactical (bias alert: author) includes provisions specific to VSF, and can be played with 3mm through 15mm figures. |

I have ME – somewhere – but how well is it suited to Earth warfare ? What basing does it use ? |

ME uses 40mm frontage bases, 20mm deep for Imperial powers, 40mm deep for others – so completely HOTT compatible.. There are lists for home service British and cephalods, etc for Earth based games. Mike |

I second both Martian Empires and Space 1889. We use ME for the Sudan 1st Anglo-Boer war and the NW frontier. Also planning a game of Germans invading Kent. Works very well. Very enjoyable games. One we had the Anglo-Indian force advancing through 6 foot high brush. The Dervishes were in a wadi in it to their front. Smashed the front two battalions in hand to hand and threw them back in disorder into the stout English troops standing bravely behind the Sepoys. Another we had a relief column heading to a besieged garrison. The Dervish ambush would have worked too if it hadn't been for those meddling Sikhs. Another straight forward engagement against the Afghans sadly turned into yet another Maiwand. Not a good day, that one. So it can work very well. Natives or irregulars within close range DON'T have to roll for initiative. (I had the flank of an entire British army in line of march with their artillery masked in front of 1/4 of my Dervish army lying in ambush. Rolled for orders – failed. Found out after I didn't need to. Would have turned and 2nd Abu Klea into a 1st Abu Klea :( |

I'd suggest The Hive and the Flame and its base rules 800 Fighting Englishmen. That will have everything you need! |
