We do use Black Powder and its ancient counterpart Hail Caesar – we have pretty big forces in most of our battles

Black Powder works well in large multiplayer games. It pays to have someone running the show though – keeping the moves 'moving on'.

I'm not sure where the mats comes from, a friend from our club bought a couple during a trip to the US. They come all green, a surface of flock covering the sheet, and I found that you can scratch it to reveal the light brown of the base material underneath, making it look like a rural road. Pretty neat.
