Looks like there is a rogue Russian search engine on the go again.

My UK and USA pageviews are being swamped from Russia by a factor of twenty to one.

You are just popular Jim… or you attracted the bride brigade by mention of mail-order!

JimDuncanUK06 Dec 2016 6:14 a.m. PST

Hopefully just popular!

Same here for my blog. Slowing down today after 3 days of Russian bots.

Oh Bugger07 Dec 2016 3:40 a.m. PST

Yes noticed the same.

JimDuncanUK07 Dec 2016 4:50 a.m. PST

Still going strong today.

Am now getting lots of pageviews from Poland.

Getting swamped by them. Question, why and What do they possibly get out of doing this?

I've read that the purpose of page view bots (my term) is to provoke the response of clicking back to see who's viewing your own site. I believe the goal is to give the bot sites large viewing numbers of their own, boosting any "view based" ad revenues at a minimum. It might also serve as a way of collecting data from the curious blogger clicking to go to the source of the bot views, or even spreading malware to the same unwary curious clickers.

I am getting the same – makes a mockery of the old page view count

Pauls Bods12 Dec 2016 10:41 a.m. PST

Thanks Howard. I havenīt clicked on any of the sources. The actual numbers of hits from the listed sources donīt really reflect the number of hits Iīm getting, 5.500 yesterday! The Referring URLs add up to around about 100..so I canīt see how they are doing this. A main source or are they using hundreds of bots?
The Audience map Thing gives a closer number of entries to whatīs showing up on the overview.
As Giles has said, it makes a mockery of old page view Count.
