Hello, I would like to try these 3mm sci-fi armour etc. from OO

link

- do you know if there are photos of them painted and based, on some website, blog?

- how big (or small) are exactly them? could they be based singly on a penny, or do you need tweezers to move them around the table?

- if you have them, what rules are you using?

- are there other 3mm sci-fi manufacturers?

thank you!

I have many O8 3mm minis, mostly moderns for Vietnam and FFT2/3. They are great little models and each vehicle can easily fit on a penny. These are the few vehicle minis that I actually do base (though on small pieces of 1/16" thick basswood). I do not know of any other 3mm 1/600 sci-fi makers out there, though IIRC perhaps Irregular does 2mm?

There is some 3mm available on Shapeways, Javelin98 from TMP runs the National Cheese Emporium – link and I think there might be some more guys out there.

Here's some Vietnam stuff on pennies: link

Join the 3mm Yahoo Group. Lots of photos in their files.

Here is an old topic from TMP showing one fellows 3mm SF army.

You can use just about any rules set by modifying distances and ranges. I use a free set of rules from pz8 which can be found in the 3mm Yahoo groups files.

Missed the rules question – my limited 3mm sci-fi stuff (so far) is going to be used for the heroic defence of Tokyo in my giant monster gaming, but if I do eventually get to the point of having full armies, I'd look at Strike Legion – Planetary Ops as my first choice, maybe some of the Nordic Weasel stuff (his Brigade Commander will be used for 3mm moderns), or Future War Commander.

I've thought of using 3mm minis for the Ogre board game. Not having a 6mm Ogre has been what's stopping me. As soon as the kickstarter delivers though I'll be getting some

You can (and should) base them.

They're intended for use, I think, with multiple vehicles on a stand to make platoons or companies but I have some based on individual pennies and they work fine.

A tiny bit fiddly sure, but they look fine, if you paint them in a way that makes sure they stand out from the flock or base colour.

For rules, anything suitable for 6mm will work fine in 3mm as well.

Dirtside has gone out of fashion though it was the gold standard for many years.
Strike Legion is great and pretty "techy".
Future War Commander I ended up not enjoying so much but it's very popular.
My own Brigade Commander or LaserStorm rules will do fine.

Yes, you should absolutely base them! They are so tiny that you run the risk of someone sneezing and sending an entire brigade from Paris to Moscow!

Also, Picoarmor here in the US offers sample packs of some of their 3mm ranges, which are a nice way to get a feel for how large most of their offerings will be.

I post pictures on my Shapeways shop showing them in comparison with various coins, for what that's worth, and I've tried to have a copy of the most common coins for Anglo-Euro gamers (US quarter, British pound, euro cent):

Trust Javelin – he knows of what he speaks! :) And makes some damn fine 3mm armies as well IMHO.
