What rules do you think are necessary for a good skirmish game? Obviously you need movement, resolution type (type and number of dice or other), shooting, melee, activation, and vehicle rules if applicable. What else? Things like pinning, morale, etc.? |

I think electronic warfare and satellites might be over-complicating your Viking warband game… |

To be fair, I had modern / scifi setting in mind when asking the question |

All my own opinion but: The core: *When does my guy activate? *What can my guy do? *How far can I move and what choices do I have while moving? *How do I shoot you? *How do I hit you with a shovel? *How scared am I? *Can I react to what you do? *How do I do non-battlefield actions? The bits I personally like to see in a skirmish game: *Some sort of progression system. *Some sort of nod towards individual characters or individuals with particular skills. *A scenario generator (I value this more than pre-cooked scenarios but including scenarios will make a lot of gamers happy) *Notes on interesting terrain features. *If its a scifi game, give me a way to use the guys already on my shelf. *Points system is welcome but not required. *If a points system ISN'T included, have a random force generator instead. *Some optional rules to tailor the game a bit to my experience. |
