It is the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth, and the great fortress of Minas Tirith is all that stands defend the free peoples from Sauron. The Battle of the Pelennor Fields was the ultimate battle for control of the Planet.

Using a modified version of L'Art de la Guerre, the forces involved represent about 700 points to a side.

This game was run from at the HMGS's event Fall In.

What a fun battle. The turn-by-turn mayhem was fun to read. Each side did well, but a gate too far for the forces of evil. Thanks for sharing.

What size of game is that for the rules? Could you have done it with 2-3X as many figs? Would the rules handle that and do it to completion with 4 hours? Some nice old school figs there.

Thanks.

I used an Ancients rule set, L'Art de la Guerre, which is French, and growing in popularity in the US. I modified the rules to include riding carnivores, Heroes and their effects, and random events. A "normal game" is 200 points and would be on an 1800x1200mm board, close enough to 6x4 as to not matter. The game should take about 2.5 hours.

The armies you saw were about 700 points. When I first laid out the board in play testing I did fill the board with Mordor, and while that would have looked cool, it would have taken 10 hours to play, and 2 hours to set up and tear down.

Hi Phil,

Great report, I like reading all your reports but this one has inspired me to do a 15mm version at my club on the 18th December.

I'll write and photo it, all will be proxies models from Ancient Armies but collecting and creating proper versions is a project fo4r the future.

Additionally my Friend has been working on LOTR version of the troop types for LADG whihc I am hoping to use and explain if he gives me permission.

Thanks
Madan

I will look forward to it. Give me a prod when it is up, as I don't hang out on the Fantasy board that much. As far as proxies go, lets see… The Riders of Rohan were re-purposed Byzantines, Aragorns troops were Dark Age trash, the wall defenders were Byzantine Psiloi. Gondorian Cavalry was Normans, Byzantines and Elvish. The gate guards were Skutatatoi and (gasp) actual Gondorian Infantry. On Mordor's side, I have Persians subbing in for Haradrim. Dark Age for Easterlings. But also Lizard riders, because it was too cool not to, and the 4 Warg Chariot, which was too powerful in the game.

Hi Phil,

Thats not too far out from what I was going for, but I will be using Koreans as Easterlings, 4 Elven Silver Helms as Swan Knights as they look the part and the rest will be Normans (with extra elves here and there), I have about 12 Indian Elephants and will probably use 28mm figures for Generals and personalities…

Aragons Rabble will be supplimented with Undead…this is more a recreation of the film than the book…should be fun, each player will get about 200 points but the Orc will be on endless horde thingy, the finer points need work…

incidentally, what was the 4 warg chariot classed as…?

PHGamer06 Dec 2016 1:52 p.m. PST

2 Knights as it was a double wide unit. +1 to all, Impact, General bonus +1 and +1 bonus for Carnivore vs Herbivore. In play test I gave it 6 hits to be destroyed, but that was too much, so for this fight it took 4 hits.

Ah, ok, got it, I'll post mine with the report, also one of our club members has just sent me a list of his 15mm LOTR collection which he has been collecting for the last 20 years and so I have all the figures and no need for proxy anything. This promises to be quite spectacular!!!
