I'm stumped trying to come up with colors for a dog or cat that has a definite orange tint to its fur. For example, a chow, a light cocker spaniel, or an orange tabby. Orange alone is not right. Adding brown to orange just muddies it. Chestnut is too dark. Adding an orange drybrush to a tan coat doesn't look right either. Any suggestions?

They aren't really orange. The color is more of a rich golden tan with a slight reddish tint.

Prime white, heavy wash with raw sienna (I use FW ink), drybrush with light tan or sand color, highlight with ivory. Pick out stripes with a reddish tan.

Mix colours from:

Off white
Yellow ochre
Light brown
Red leather

They might sound a odd selection but they work for what you want to achieve. You need to be subtle with your mixes. Work over a white undercoat.

For ears of the pup you will need to add something like flat earth to your selection of colours.
