Hello all, have 100 Years War armies to paint up and am a bit daunted by the prospect, to be honest. What would people suggest as essential reference books for the newbie painter in this period? As well as painting info, a decent one-volume history would go down nicely too. Would people recommend the Ospreys here? I'm looking at the Crecy/Poitiers one, the Agincourt one, the French Armies of the 100 Years War one, and the Armies of Burgundy one. Is it worth getting all of these? Any info and advice much appreciated. Cheers, Aaron |

Hi Aaron, For a single volume overview of the entire conflict I would recommend that by Desmond Seward link It has been out a while, but is an excellent read and would, I'd guess, fire you up for your project. If you want a more detailed account, you could always tackle Jonathan Sumption's huge, multi-volume work. I confess to finding them too detailed for my needs (it gets a little overwhelming), but they are an astonishing achievement of scholarship. Good luck with your project! Daryl |

Jonathan Sumption's multi-volume serias is long but very good. Anything by Anne Curry (esp Agincourt). Juliet Barker's Conquest for post Agincourt (also Wadge's Verneuil). War Cruel and Sharp by Clifford Rogers is essential for Edward III. Collected sources: Barker's Life and Campaigns of the Black Prince and Curry's The Battle of Agincourt. Thomas J. Maybe try 'Edward III and the Scots' (Nicholson)for the prelude; it's where Edward III learned how to not lose. |
