My favourite comes from the phoney war period when Monty wrote to the War Office suggesting that facilities should be set up so that the men could have "horizontal recreation" as he put it. ;-) |

Decisions! And a general, a commander in chief who has not got the quality of decision, then he is no good. |

I think it's a paraphrase, but I'd go with; "Without infantry you can do nothing, absolutely nothing." Still holds as true today as it did then, and all the centuries before. Gary |

My father used to have this on a brass plaque in his bar: "A Marine should be sworn to the patient endurance of hardships, like the ancient knights; and it is not the least of these necessary hardships to have to serve with sailors." - Field Marshal Montgomery Guess which branch my father served in! Cheers, Ben |

My memorable Monty story was when he had his senior officer of engineers come to his Tac Headquarters to explain why his troops weren't getting supplied . The officer told him that he had no idea that it rained so much in Italy and his bridges were getting continually washed away by the deluge . Monty looked at the officer with some distain then reached into his desk and pulled out a copy of Baedekers' Italy , thumbing through the book he opened it up at the relevant section and bid the officer to read it out . " In November the weather in Italy is very wet and rainfall of up to 12 inches can be experienced" . End of interview . |

I was going to go with "fox killed in open", but then realised that was o'connor, though it would have perhaps been more apt for Monty. |
