I'm slowly reading Radetzky's Marches, about that marshal's campaigns during the 1848-49 revolution in Italy. All of the fighting in Italy involved the same technology as the Napoleonic Wars – smooth-bore muskets with some jager rifles, smooth-bore artillery and some Congreve style rockets. The City of Bologna held off an Austrian attack in 1848. In 1849 the resurgent Habsburgs sent a force some 10,000 strong to capture the city. A first hasty attack was driven back with over 100 casualties. The garrison turned down several summons to surrender. The Austrians had 24 field guns, 6 howitzers and 6 rocket tubes. They bombarded the city to little effect. Some days later two 12 inch mortars (with 200 rounds) and some more howitzers arrived. They began to bombard the city. Within 2 hours, white flags fluttered from the city towers. What a difference a couple siege mortars made. |

Maybe the title should have read: "A Right fool for the job"? |
