An amazing conversion of the Airfix old favourite Fort Sahara.

With respect to Robert / Serrez les Rangs (2013)

That's a really nice conversion. I was looking at the finished product wondering how in the world you could say it was the same model? Well done!

cavcrazy02 Dec 2016 2:22 p.m. PST

Amazing work

Zargon02 Dec 2016 3:01 p.m. PST

Very nice. Mines gone back in time and is normally set up for Biblical period. Wish they re issue this iconic piece. Good for 15 mm and 20 mm

Broglie02 Dec 2016 3:14 p.m. PST

Very impressive and inspiring.

Wondering why buy the Fort in the first place and not just scratch the whole thing?

capncarp03 Dec 2016 10:25 a.m. PST

I keep on hitting the "thumbs up" button, but nothing shows. Oh, well:
Very.
Nicely.
Done.
Captain.

You have to press the 'like' button not the thumbs up button.

Ah, now I know why there was a sudden spike in visitors to my blog…

Thanks for the kind words, and to the Good Captain for linking it. I've been surprised just how popular this post has become.

Wondering why buy the Fort in the first place and not just scratch the whole thing?

You're assuming a degree of planning and intent that simply didn't exist. I built it precisely because I had the model.

If I hadn't have bought the kit on impulse when I came across it in the shop, the thought of making a monastery like this would never have crossed my mind in the first place.

But I do a number of buildings from scratch. The price of shipping resin models to Japan is often prohibitively expensive. There's a lot that can be done with foamboard, paper tubes, sand and PVA.

And it's fun! The only problem is storage.

Excellent conversion.
Your´s was the inspriration for my conversion of the same kit

Wow; those are great conversions!

Stavka06 Dec 2016 6:48 a.m. PST

Paul, your take on the fort is just fantastic.

I love the way you modelled the stairs and the fact that you manage to find the patience to do all the stonework around the doorways and windows. I didn't have the patience to do that!

It's really gratifying to me that someone was able to see what I did with the kit, and was inspired enough not only to try their own hand at it, but to do it so well.

Captain dEwell06 Dec 2016 7:05 a.m. PST

Agreed. Hats off to you both.

What's next?

Stavka06 Dec 2016 7:59 a.m. PST

In my case, a harbour defence gun tower for the RN to destroy in Sharp Practice II games. Old packing boxes, wooden bits, and foamboard.

And a bunker for my WW2 Japanese

Wish I could get my hands on the old Airfix Roman mile fort.

Beautiful work, really nice to look at!

I've been wondering about buying the fort too.

Then, since it is relatively simple construction with more or less straight walls and such I've also pondered if I should just scratch one.

Never actually seen a copy, but other buildings of the same range do feature thinnish plastic walls so the wall thickness (or thinness) is my main concern with the original one. Should you thicken them and if you decide to do so why not build the whole thing from the scratch :)

This has always been one of my favorite Airfix miniature boxes, hence my fascination with the fort too:
