Prior to the Bardin Regulation, I've seen prints that show the French Habit-long with either horizontal or verticle pockets. It seems that the horizontal pockets might have been an earlier configuration but, I don't know. Were there regulations issued that defined specific patterns for the Habit-long? Rob |

I think the horizontal was for ligne and the vertical for leger. Though, with all the variations of cuffs, unpiped coats, etc., I wouldn't be surprised it was at the whim of the colonel. |

I don't know if anybody is actually reading this thread, but I though I would close it out with what I have subsequently founding reading Lucien Rousselot. In a description of the habit around 1805, he states, "In reality, there were many variations, particularily in the colors of the cuffs, which for some regiments red, piped white, or white or even non-existant. The pocket flaps were sometimes vertical and collars were sometimes piped blue." and quoting Ministry orders dated 13 July, 1805, "Many of the colonels have abolished the red piping on the lapels, others have had long pockets made (vertical) instead of the horizontal ones." |
