I've seen some modelers do the Berlin Brigade scheme on Chieftains, so yes it can be done. even more spectacular is the Swedish & Finnish Splinter Schemes. Lots of masking tape, I assume!

I haven't yet done a splinter or rectangle camouflage pattern, but I think that it would be quite simple with spray paint:

1) Spray on the first color.
2) Mask some shapes that you want to keep.
3) Repeat 1) and 2) until you have all put on all of the colors desired.
4) Remove masking tape.

For splinters or rectangles, you have to make straight cuts to the masking tape. For more natural patterns, you cut in curved lines.

I've done it in 1/35 Scale. It is a lot of masking to get the effect.
