Fall of France 1944, I guess. Certainly not fall of France, 1940. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Are they are meant to be early-war SS, but with German weapons instead of the more realistic mish-mash of Czech and other types? That would explain the boots and cammo smock. |

According to the site they are indeed meant to be early war SS camo smocks. |

According to the site they are indeed meant to be early war SS camo smocks. Interesting… I had the impression that the Waffen SS generally wore the Feldbluse M40 during the 1940 campaign. This was perhaps a bit more green than the Wehrmacht's feldgrau, but not camo. Didn't know that they might all be expected to wear camo smocks. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Mark, I had the same impression, but did a search and turned up these fellows with lots of cameo – link |

I think it varied from one unit to another, but yes, the SS (and I think strictly they were still SS Verfungstruppe in 1940, not Waffen-SS) were predominantly in non-camo uniforms. Given that the four 'divisions' had been slung together from various parts of the SS empire, that is perhaps to surprising. iirc the Polizei guys just turned up in their police uniforms (which they were still wearing outside Leningrad in 1941, lucky them). The charming chaps of the SS Totenkopfverband seem to have largely kept their concentration camp guards uniforms, although there are one to two photos of them in camo smocks. I am always reminded of the Mitchell and Web sketch where, having noticed that their uniforms are festooned with skulls, the question is posed: "Are we the baddies?". |

It is a classic – and for those who haven't seen this moment of realisation for two SS Officers, here it is: YouTube link And yes; it's funny. As is the following sketch about Donitz becoming Fuhrer. Nick |

I think the skull motif was an old logo going back to the Prussian army, wasn't it? In any case, an unfortunate one for so many reasons… I have quite a few Crusader models and they are almost all very well suited to Early War. They are really nice, chunky models. I don't think I will personally be picking up any SS for any reason, though! |
