Hello all, I am putting together a little boardgame side-project that will focus on convoys of U.N. trucks providing humanitarian aid after some sort of disaster in a semi/undeveloped country. I am looking to grab some 6mm minis to use as game pieces, after which I can use them later in other games. I thus have the following question: What would YOU consider the most common type of military truck and helicopter used by the United Nations (either for peacekeeping forces or humanitarian aid)? Would it be Ural 375s? M35s? Mi-8s? It does not have to be what is the actual most common truck/helo, just what you would first think of when you think "U.N." |

the most common trucks would be civi ones bought by the un or older ex military. trouble is they use different ones dependant on where they will be used. mercedes benz are quite common however. what period do you want? as there is plenty of choice |

I would go with the Mi-Mil 8/17 for the Helo as there are several contractors tha supply 'air freight and logistical support' to the UN in a variety of deployments…..trucks are also contracted if the national components lack logistical support units…..I would look for cab over engine (flat cab) units just as a change from Ural and M35 long bonnet trucks……. |

UH-1 and MAN or Mercedes trucks or go for the older Bedford Q series |

When you say "UN" I conjure a paint scheme more than a vehicle model. link |

How do they keep the trucks so clean in all these areas with no water?. Sorry children there is no water for you the UN soldiers must wash the trucks. |

I'll echo Extra Crispy. My immediate thought was "white trucks" & UN logo. Double snort of laughter to cosmicbank and the ultra clean, shiny trucks. |

Mi8s or Mi17s, maybe Hueys. Usually Mercedes Unimogs for trucks (plus the occasional Toyota Hilux), but whatever you can find and paint white will work just fine. |

Hueys aren't that common. They never gained as much traction in countries that generally provide peacekeepers (usually third world, neutral types). Most common helos in Africa are Pumas and Mi-8s/17s. India/Pakistan also operate large numbers of them. Mi-8/-17s are also used by a lot of private companies that contract to the UN – they were available new or near new for bargain prices in the 1990s. What Hueys are used appear to be twin engine Bell 212s/UH-1N (or Italian licence produced versions).
Traditional single engined UH-1B-H/Bell 205s don't feature prominently. However USA has started delivering upgraded Huey IIs to countries like Kenya and Uganda so expect these in fashionable UN white some time soon!

@ Shaun The period I am looking at is roughly mid-1980s to present, the image in my head is of the UN in Africa/Mid-East (ie Rwanada Genocide, Jordanian Refugee Camps). I am looking for Military vehicles in particular since they are much easier to find in 6mm, and the reason I would like to use 6mm is that they are around the size of most boardgame pieces and rather cheap to get a hold of. @ Gaz0045 Thank you for the suggestion, will see if I can find some flat cab military trucks. @Andy P I was already looking at MAN trucks and the GAZ-66 (which appears similar to the Bedford Q and much easier to find I think), but I would think UH-1 would be too small for anything other than tactical troop (re)deployments, thus would not be very useful for bulk supply delivery (feel free to correct my assumption though). @Extra Crispy True, the paint job is the greatest identifier, but having some specific vehicles that are associated with the U.N. is preferable to some random vehicles in my opinion. @cosmicbank I snickered… @Everyone else Thank you for responses! It seems Mi-8/17 is agreed to be the rotary-wing aircraft for me. |
