… During the Korean War.

"In 1950, as U.S. forces retreated from China's onslaught across the Yalu River, Gen. Douglas MacArthur called for strategic air attacks against China. Many believed that this would necessarily include the atomic bomb, America's "asymmetric advantage" of the time.

America's large arsenal of atomic weapons, and the fleet of strategic bombers necessary to deliver those weapons, was the central military advantage that the United States enjoyed over the Soviet Union in 1950.

The large, battle tested Red Army remained in Eastern Europe, capable of moving west on short notice. Many believed that only America's ability to destroy the Soviet heartland with nuclear weapons held the Russians back…"

Amen …

Just when I thought I'd put you in a basket.

I'll echo Ralph.

Don't read too much into that … I'm still a basket case … just ask the VA Shrinks …

As I repeatedly post … nucs/WMDs don't have to be used by the US to complete the mission or task generally. Whatever it may be …

However, as I posted on other threads here. I have a little working knowledge of nucs/WMDs …

And I'm well aware of the fact that nuclear weapons are very "dirty" with fallout, etc. I was trained and had the additional duty of an NBC and ADM officer …

I was "selected" for an additional duty as an Atomic Demolitions Missions Officer. As a 1LT in the 101.

The devices were "backpack" nucs. Came in two types. IIRC, SADM – Small Atomic Demolition Munitions and MADM – Medium Atomic Demolitions Munitions. I forget the Yields. old fart About the size of a basketball and the other a little larger (?).

The SADM/MADM would be emplaced literally be hand. A mixed unit would be inserted to the location. Consisting of :

1 Inf Plt – For 360 security, + the ADMO(me !) with Satcom to the POTUS/Pentagon

1 CE ADM Section – @ 3+ CE ADM Specialists to emplace and "set up" the ADM

1 SF A-Team – Just incase things went bad. To insure the denotation, etc., happened. I was never told why they were there. I'm just surmising.

Once emplaced, Timer(s) set, etc., we'd exfil to a pick up location … hopefully …

Nukes are the proverbial Pandora's Box. Once you let loose with one, God only knows where it'd end.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP29 Nov 2016 8:32 a.m. PST

And will very much probably be a bad outcome or "ending". Another reason states like Iran should not get nucs …

GarrisonMiniatures29 Nov 2016 9:49 a.m. PST

Actually, a good reason for NO states to have nukes. Only reason I'm sort of happy with us having nukes is simple – don't trust anyone else. That includes the US. It would include us if no-one else had any but as it stands…

At this point … can't put that genie back in the bottle. And there are probably too many that already have nucs. Let alone islamists of various types. Some that want to foster in the Apocalypse.

But we still may need nucs incase of an alien invasion, etc., …

Now you're just joshing, right? ….right?

We *will* need nukes to nudge any near-Earth asteroid off an impacting course.

Silent Pool29 Nov 2016 8:47 p.m. PST

And which other countries possess nuclear weapons that we should be very glad if they never fire them?

75 years of US nuclear restraint is a remarkable record and should be celebrated.

Excellent point. Let's celebrate the fact the other 8 nations who have nuclear weapons haven't used them either:

Here's to you, Russia, China, India, Israel, France, North Korea, Pakistan and the United Kingdom as well as the United States.

But it's a Big Universe … no one really knows what is out there … do they ?

Silent Pool30 Nov 2016 8:31 a.m. PST

I don't disagree with you ochoin, but when do Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, India, and China reach 75 years successful non- use deterrence?

I don't think an islamic theocracy like Iran or even terrorists like Daesh/AQ, etc., maybe as circumspect. At least based on their rhetoric, actions, predilections, etc., … Call me very "suspect" …

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP01 Dec 2016 12:06 a.m. PST

Yes, North Korea is a worry. And by definition a terrorist group with a nuclear weapon might be an issue (why don't they make a movie about that….).

But it's a Big Universe … no one really knows what is out there … do they ?

I'm fairly sure this was a movie & not a documentary.

Israel will reach 75 years (estimated, since they've never officially announced that they have nukes) in about 2040. India's first nuke test was in 1974, so roughly 2050 for them. Pakistan's first nuke test was in 1998, so roughly 2075 for them. China's first test was in 1964, so roughly 2040.

North Korea, however, I expect to USE their nukes within the next 10 years.

I can't see the pic … but it is a statistical improbability that we are the only life forms in the Galaxy let alone the Universe. And note I didn't say we're the only intelligent life form in the Galaxy, as it appear, we may not be that intelligent. Based on the media, news feeds, the internet, etc. …
