From what I can tell according to Al-Jazeera and the BBC, the only Iraqi ground troops in the city limits are their Special Forces (fnar – special because they're reliable!) – the regular army units and militias are still outside the city (in the case of the KRG troops this is because they've been ordered to remain outside to prevent the KRG from annexing Mosul). This means that the casualties are being suffered disproportionately by Iraq's best troops, thus reducing the overall quality of their armed forces. |

Not too much of a surprise that the Iraqi SF are the only troopers that appear to be effective. From what I can tell they are more like "shock troops". Than what the US or UK., etc., considers SF. And yes, even after Mosul is retaken. There will be continuing differences with all the various factors. In the Iraqi population. Wouldn't be too surprised if once Daesh is attrited to the point of limited effectiveness. That the Iraqis will start fighting among themselves. And have their own little civil war … |
