I've been reading the Osprey "Patriot Militia 1775-1782" by the Gilberts. The Gilberts are a husband and wife team who also wrote the Osprey "Cowpens". Both books seem to focus on the Spartan regiments of SC and their involvement in the War in the South. It appears the Pickens was the overall commander of the militia and relied upon the Spartans heavily. Can anyone recommend any books dealing with the Spartan Regiments. I have all of the well known books, so I'm looking for private university publishing's or Doctorate thesis papers. Something along those lines. And secondly, it would stand to reason that they had some sort of flag or banner. Any ideas? I'm not above creating my own flag, using Paint, as long as it would be correct for the period. I'm thinking that a SC moon flag with "SPARTANS" scrolled somewhere would be acceptable. Any other ideas? |

Are they called Spartans, due to their uniforms???? |

Just write "MOLON LABE" on the flag. And add a Gadsden Flag for the true modern militia look. |

They would have been from the Spartanburg area. Sometime around September of 1775, the Spartan Regiment was organized and John Thomas became its Colonel. This regiment of men was made up of men from the upcountry. The regiment, loaded with ammunition from Fort Charlotte, was soon ready for engagement. In December of 1775, it participated in the "Snow Campaign." From: link I would just use regular militia in back woods clothes. The brush is very dense. I like close to Old Ninety Six, which is pretty much how it was 200 years ago. |

I've read all that's on Google and was looking for something in depth. I'll see if I can contact the Gilberts and ask them. |

The Spartans and the Little River Regiment were at Cowpens and at numerous engagements in the South. They were not small units. Bounce around Google to read about them. |
