Anyone know of a nice cheap flock/sand for Petersburg. I bought some on ebay but the prices dont appeal to me. Been looking on worksites but not seen a suitable sand. |

link Use a strainer to get out the big pieces. Add big pieces back into mix as desired. |

Good suggestion, thanks a bunch. Does anyone use sandbox sand for dioramas, terrain or basing or should one avoid it? |

I tried the sandbox sand and it is too uniform and too fine. It clumps weirdly and doesn't look right. If you were putting it on a very small base you might have decent results, like on a single figure base, but otherwise it just looks weird. I'd avoid it or mix it with something else. |

Not sure what sort of sand you want, Aquarium sand is very fine if you want that, sharp sand (uk) has a lot of grit in it play sand is fairly uniform and small grained. Walk past your nearest building site and see what they have, make sure it is dry then run it through a tea strainer or fine mesh sieve or through a piece of net curtain, if you don't drink tea. I wouldn't buy sand from the terrain sellers, there are too many other places to get the stuff. it doesn't need to be sand, you can get lots of fine "dust at the side of a concrete road, just take a brush and collect it. Just don't breath the dust cos it is not very nice. |

@Rabbit, that's a bit of my problem, I want the most realistic look that's all I know, aquarium sand doesn't feel quite right. I bought some of these that I thought looked right: auction But with shipping to EU it gets quite expensive. Here's what I want:
More suggestions are welcome, preferably stuff that can be bought on ebay. |

For eastern Virginia you are definitely going to want some reddish color in whatever you buy |
