Can anyone tell me which Russian Infantry regiment had red leggings?

According to Osprey, the Apcheronski Regiment was allowed to wear them for their performance at Kunersdorf.

The Apcheronski Regiment was given the distinction of wearing red gaiters because of their performance at Kunersdorf in 1759, where they held their ground "up to their knees in blood."

I was a little apprehensive about painting the gaiters on my Apcheronski as red leather (like their belts) because I couldn't see how they would have been issued whilst on campaign – were they issued (as seems most likely) back in Russia after the SYW as a badge of honour? – at best, they can't have got them until the campaign of 1760, and the Russians (under Peter III) left the war in January 1762.

They fought in only two major actions, Gross Jagersdorf and Kunnersdorf, and both of them were fought in standard colour gaiters.

However, I went ahead, painted them red, and I haven't ever looked back. It's nice to have readily recognisable units in an otherwise uniform army. I have more than 20 units of Russian line infantry now and I can never remember most of their regiments by the flag, so the red gaiters are great.

I did the same thing Olicana. Sometimes artistic license wins out over historical accuracy.

Your are probably right that the did not wear the rec gaiters until well after the battle, but it DOES make a great way the recognize a unit in an otherwise uniform army.

I enjoy working in 28mm Napoleonics, only for the peninsular war, and sometime "invent" a drummer uniform when I have no distinctive information for that unit. I did the 36e de ligne in a buff coat with violette collar, lapels cuffs, flaps and turnbacks, edged aurora. I picked the violette because the 36e is in the series that was to have worn violette with white uniforms.

Russian 7YW flags are magnificent, and good unit indicators. No such luck with the Austrians, so practically nothing to make them unique units.
