I was just handed a complete collection of unpainted 20mm lead for the SCW? I also received a few SCW books like Uniforms, Organization and History of Legion Condor, Uniformes Militares de la Guerra Civil Española, and The Last Crusade to help me figure out things like organization and painting, so I have a few ideas on how to start. But… Starting a new army is a lot of effort and starting a new period even more so. Added to that I have no troops in any other period in 20mm, plus I have WW II collections in 15mm (Flames of War) and 28mm (singly based), so I am grasping for what I gain in terms of gaming or modeling experience that I don't already have. I have bought Peter Pig's Bayonet and Ideology Third and it seems very much like WW II with lots of infantry and a lot less artillery, armor, and aircraft. I do not have early WW II armies, so such lightweight armor would have a different feel, but it seems like just another theater of what I already have. Am I wrong? What makes the SCW distinct fro WW II in terms of game play? Thanks in advance. Dale |

A lot less tank-heavy. If you stereotype a bit for gaming purposes, morale emphasized over training. Armies that tend to be offensive oriented to a fault. Infantry gets to shine. You can talk in silly Spanish accents rather than silly German or Russian ones. |

They have the coolest interwar vehicles ever. Putting a Hispano Suiza MC-36, or a Bilbao AFV on the table is probably reason enough to paint the lead. |

Also, you can actually get the Kraut players to put a Panzer I on the gaming table for a change :-) |

It seems to me the reasoning behind the question is flawed. You want to do the SCW because…because you want to do the SCW. The tank density is irrelevant. It's like asking why one would want to do the War of 1812 when there are no cuirassiers or hussars. You want to do it because you want to do it. |

With Winston here – it is a different war – if you want to game WW2 then… game WW2. If you want to game SCW then… As to why you would want to – its very different tactically from WW2 – much less of of everything – largely infantry armed with rifles – odd MG, and sometimes tanks and planes. |

Hate to say Winston/John is right but this time… he is. |

Because it is interesting in ways that WWII isn't. It certainly is an investment in time and money to do a new period and scale. |

So THAT is where my message went! It disappeared, so I wrote a second one. And no, Winston is wrong. I was asking the readership why THEY play the SCW and not why I should. I was also trying to dispel (or validate) my notions on the SCW. |
