Just what it says really. It might be nice to keep it to countries that do have a major overseas tourist business but that probably only leaves out North Korea & Tibet along with some of the Middle East. For me it's: South Africa Egypt Dubai |
McKinstry | 21 Nov 2016 11:47 a.m. PST |
Of the 'big' names, certainly Egypt and probably Russia although I'd love to see St. Petersburg. I think Hati can probably join the Norks but Tibet is part of China (not a political statement on my part) and I'd like to visit China. |

In the 70s in the previous century, I was a big fan of Alexander the Great. Not so much now, but follow me. I was saving up a little money to visit Iran and grok on the historical sites. "Is it not passing brave to be a king, and to ride in triumph through Persepolis." That kind of thing. The Shah was in charge, and as we all know, Iranians love Yankees. Events followed events, and I ended up buying a car instead. I have a hard time understanding why American tourists still keep going to these countries that routinely arrest "students". Like that dude in North Korea who stole a political poster and is now breaking rocks and chanting chain gang songs. |

In no particular order of suckiness (by my vacation standards): Orlando Las Vegas Los Angeles New York Hawaii Paris London Singapore Miami Cabo San Lucas Fort Lauderdale Tijuana Cancun Rio de Janeiro La Playa del Sol |
Extrabio1947 | 21 Nov 2016 12:45 p.m. PST |
Probably the Southeast Asian countries, such as Cambodia, Vietnam, or Indonesia. Actually, Egypt would be pretty high up on my "like" list if didn't have safety concerns. |

There's too much of Europe and Asia that I'd prefer to see first, so I'll say: anywhere but Europe and Asia. |

Based on the Olympics--Brazil hit the top of my list |

I'd probably avoid places where the main things to do seem to be hanging out in the sun (I burn easily) and get drunk. Just not my idea of a good time. Looking at etotheipi's list, this means I'd second Cabo San Lucas and Cancun. Grelber |

Hmmm, lots of excellent candidates, but I suspect the following are at or near the very top of the list: Iran Iraq Syria Afghanistan Pakistan Yemen Egypt Libya North Korea Venezuela Mexico (would like to visit, but the crime, kidnappings, murders put me off) Brazil (as for Mexico) Cuba (as long as the Castro brothers/communists are in power, I won't be visiting there) Nicaragua, and most of Central and South America (as for Cuba – commies, and Mexico) Most of the rest, if not all of Africa would be a "no-go zone" too |

Vegas is number one for me. I hate that place. Also, the Amazon. I'm fascinated by the concept of a giant rain forest, but after watching a couple of bot fly investations on television, I've decided to skip the in person experience. |
warwell | 21 Nov 2016 1:49 p.m. PST |
Mexico (would like to visit, but the crime, kidnappings, murders put me off) I did an "ancient civilizations" tour of Mexico about a decade ago. It was awesome. I would not do it now for the reasons Mako11 mentioned. |
Vigilant | 21 Nov 2016 2:21 p.m. PST |
Ignoring safety issues, because there are places I would love to go to but won't because of safety risks, I would put Las Vegas Nevada at the top (the one in New Mexico is much more interesting). After that anywhere that is just for sun bathing and drinking. Give me places with some history or great scenary/architecture anyday |

Been to Moscow. Aside from the normal tourist spots, Red Square, etc, its a big, ugly dirty city. On the other hand, St. Petersburg is awesome. Clean, lots to see and do. Great naval museum, the Hermitage, and the Lt. Cruiser Aurora. Do a cruise of the Baltic that includes St. Petersburg, and skip Moscow completely. |
Gunfreak | 21 Nov 2016 2:54 p.m. PST |
All of middle east, China because of animal and human abuses. Most central Asia ( India is fascinating. But with the poverty, crime ect nope) Much of south America with some exceptions. And most of south east Asia again with a few exceptions. I would like to visit eastern Africa but that's about it on that continent. And at least for a few years 2 out of 3 countries in North America are out. |

Got to agree on Vegas, one trip was enough. It's meant to be a pleasure paradise but the waitresses look at you strange if you want a second glass of wine with your meal. Best part was going out to the Hoover dam. |

Another vote for Vegas. On the faces of nineteen out of twenty passersby, I saw the same expression – "I know I'm supposed to be having fun, it's certainly costing me an arm and a leg – so why does this suck so much?!" |
Norman D Landings | 21 Nov 2016 3:24 p.m. PST |
I've seen GITMO from the Cuban side. Cuba's a blast. Per the OP: I just plain won't go on an all-inclusive 'resort' holiday of any kind, where you spend the entire vacation in an interchangeable corporate-branded hospitality bubble, and all you see of the local culture is folk dancing in the Starlite lounge. I wouldn't actually rule anywhere out unless there's actual active unrest going on. Having said that, I have ended up – entirely by accident – in Zapatista- held villages in Chiapas, and had a brilliant time. |

On the other hand, St. Petersburg is awesome. Clean, lots to see and do. I thought it was 99% a dump. There is a central area with all the nice buildings etc and some palaces on the outskirts (just make sure you don't walk on the grass) but otherwise a huge city with little to recommend it. And the museums are so crowded with little or no attempt to organise the flow of visitors so that most of the time, as your guide ushers you from one picture of a madonna and child to another, you are literally fighting to get through doorways against an opposing group who want to photograph the madonna you've just been looking at. So, St Petersburg goes on my list. Doug |

Surprised by all the Vegas haters. My list of places I want to visit is very short. Western Europe, US (home), Canada, and Japan. Do not really care about the rest of the world. |

Well, gambling is not on my list of vices,so what's the point? I knew a couple who went back in the seventies just to see the old classic fifties-era hotels and casinos before they were destroyed. But as predicted, all gone now. |

Surprised by all the Vegas haters. One of seven people who said they didn't want to go there? There's really not a lot of "hate" in the thread. A few selections based on a derogatory opinion of the locale, but the majority rationale seems to be along the line of "this vacation spot specializes in XYZ, which doesn't interest me (any more for a few)" and the runner up is concern about the political climate/safety in general. I don't play Napoleonics. I don't hate them, either. P.S. The lack of intrigue for Las Vegas here may be related to the unusually high density of people who understand probability. :) |

Recently back from South Africa. Awesome wildlife, visited Isandlwhana and Rorke's Drift. Felt completely safe at all times (but stayed in safe areas at all times) On the other hand, I don't fancy USA at all. Too dangerous. (I might make an exception for Alaska) |
