Am I the only one who thinks there is something sick about chaining nude women to columns?
Praise the sculpting or paint job all you want; I still think it's sick.

Dave Knight19 Nov 2016 11:09 a.m. PST

Agreed Winston

Zargon19 Nov 2016 12:03 p.m. PST

Tut tut Granny, this kind of scenario is based on ancient myth and pulp fiction stories from way back when till our contemporary period (ADnD)if you don't like ancient myths and fiction about such themes that's your business and your moral code fair enough, but playing the card of its bad for us all is not on, eye of the beholder and all that people. Agree well painted especially the two headed serpent, looks like a scenario from Conan.

Dark Fable19 Nov 2016 1:38 p.m. PST

I am guessing that Winston and Dave are not big fans of Greek mythology or classical art otherwise they would be familiar with the story and imagery of the damsel in distress who is chained naked to a rock as a monster (usually a sea serpent) approaches to devour her before she is miraculously rescued by a hero. The legend of Perseus rescuing the chained and naked Andromeda has been a popular subject for artists since ancient times – it is a heroic fable painted by Rubens, Rembrandt, the Pre-Raphaelites and many others. Gustave Dore painted this sick masterpiece 'Andromeda chained to a rock' in 1869, Emile Bin painted Perseus freeing Andromeda in 1865 – by all the gods that makes my blood boil! Its not natural chaining damsels naked to rocks to be a tasty snack for some serpentine monstrosity! But this has been going on for ages . . . Antonio Tempesta painted Perseus rescuing Andromeda in the 17th century and to think that before him Jan Keynooghe was twisted enough to make a print of the whole sordid affair in 1590! What is really sick is that these paintings of chained nude women are all in museums open to the general public! Shame! Shame! lol I think the column of woe miniature is pretty cool and captures the spirit of the Andromeda fable quite well – perfect for heroic adventures inspired by myths and legends of old :D

Where does that thing poop from?

Sargonarhes19 Nov 2016 4:56 p.m. PST

Don't mean to up set any one, but what kind of guy complains about nude women chained to pillars? Deleted by Moderator

Cotton Eyed Joe19 Nov 2016 4:58 p.m. PST

Despite the moral bleatings from several I think the piece is great. It's in the right forum and captures the feel of Conan and its genre quite nicely.

I am sure the snake does not poop traditionally but fires his waste like a spitting cobra.

Grelber19 Nov 2016 8:24 p.m. PST

I suppose it comes down to what you want to do. Are the two heroes on the right trying to rescue the chained maiden? That's a reasonable goal for a game. Or, do I paint her up to be part of my own little bondage display, which less appropriate.

Yes, if it were my call, I would have modeled her with her a little something on, at least.

Yeah, I get that ancient civilizations took a different view of nudity than we do.

For what it's worth, I like the Dark Fable figures, and I have some of them. I'd like to buy some more. I'd been aware of this figure for a while, and saw no reason to purchase her, though the amphisbaena looks fun.

Put her in a chain mail bikini, call it science fiction, and make a gabillion dollars on it.

The complaint is a bit rich.

Ok. Are you telling me that you LIKE to chain nude women to columns or rocks? What kind of a guy likes his women chained and nude? Do you get your kicks out of that? Deleted by Moderator

Huscarle20 Nov 2016 3:28 a.m. PST

That's a great painted Amphisbaena.

This is a fantasy/Ancient Egyptian piece & all that entails, so maybe Winston needs to batten down his pseudo-19th Century morals & perhaps forgo the NSFW board.

Dark Fable20 Nov 2016 4:05 a.m. PST

I was wondering when the High Sparrow and the faith militant would show up . . . lol. Its good to know they are perusing The Nude and Semi-Nude Figures – NSFW Message Board to save us from miniatures which blatantly promote debauchery, decadence, moral degeneracy and general naughtiness! However, as much as the High Sparrow would love to impose his rigid sense of morality on us all I must remind the honourable gentleman that the miniature under discussion (a nude woman chained to a column) was inspired by imagery from classical art and heroic mythology as clearly shown above. Any sexual or sadomasochistic innuendo you are trying to attribute to the Column of Woe model by Dark Fable miniatures is purely of your own making. I illustrated the concept image to this model and discussed it at length with Brother Vinni when he agreed to make it. The only shame on here is that you feel it is necessary to wave an accusing finger at people asking 'Do you get your kicks out of that' . . . Deleted by Moderator This is like denouncing someone for making a model of a warrior holding a severed head: 'do you get your kicks out of killing people?' . . . 'are you into torture or necrophilia?' The spirit of this board should be open-minded discussion not the imposition of your own view of what is and is not decent. There will be no walk of atonement today . . .

Well first of all, painting miniatures like that is not the same as performing the act in real life, is it?
Otherwise, that would make all wargamers look very bad, wouldn't it.

Not worth replying to. Although it seems like I am. grin
If my remarks upset you so much, report them with the [!] button.
But it seems to me that the self righteousness here isn't coming from me.

I DID hit the complaint button. About three hours ago. But it simply does not look like it worked.
Like Monash1916 said: "It seems to depend on who is making the remark."

For a brief moment I was under the impression that you were replying to my comment Winston laugh, but I guess I was mistaken.

But hey, I just tried to warn you for the silly and especially randomly applied rules here.

As for me, I am not easily offended by any posts. As the matter of fact I could not care less in general.

Zargon20 Nov 2016 11:11 a.m. PST

I MUST be sick, but then I might be NORMAL.

Pity we aren't all forced to read and learn the classics.
But then here I go forcing an opinion eh?

The label said Nude and semi-nude NSFW. Enough said.

napthyme20 Nov 2016 1:41 p.m. PST

Ready normal people?

(crowd replies) READY!!!!

Sargonarhes20 Nov 2016 6:50 p.m. PST

Let's try this again without getting edited.
It's just a fantasy thing, that's all it is. I don't do that stuff for real, but it's just like watching anime with fan service.
But maybe the end of my comment was too directed and personal, I am sorry for that. But having others wanting to change a hobby that some groups like it as is just seems wrong. Let the market decide, not some do-gooder that think they know best. As long as no one gets hurt, what's the harm?

David Johansen20 Nov 2016 7:45 p.m. PST

Really, pillars are the ancient equivalent of a dating site. Where can a daring young hero meet women when he's fighting monsters all the time? Were it not for the practice of chaining naked women to rocks the heroes probably wouldn't notice and thus their genes would be lost to the ages. Thing of the future generations!

Todd McLeister21 Nov 2016 2:42 a.m. PST

They are very much Sword & Sorcery Appropriate™.

Looks like someone is looking for something to be outraged about.

Oh Bugger21 Nov 2016 9:52 a.m. PST

It seemed a rather over the top reaction to me.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer21 Nov 2016 11:58 a.m. PST

' As long as no one gets hurt,' – think the point of BDSM is some pain!

Swampking21 Nov 2016 12:19 p.m. PST

Ah, Winston, you know this is a hobby, right? Or, are you going to moralize over why the Confederate battle flag should not be displayed in ACW games because it might 'offend' someone? Jeez, dude, come on – fantasy used to be full of this stuff. I guess you never looked at any of the 'men's' magazines of the 1950s and 1960s or any of the famous movies with women in chains.

I remember getting the same reaction when I posted a query about wargaming John Norman's 'Gor' novels. My God, you would've thought that I had started another war with the reactions flung my way. Frankly, the outrage at being outraged by pieces of metal I find outrageous.

Great paint job and yes, I love to see women chained to columns!

Sargonarhes21 Nov 2016 3:15 p.m. PST

Probably should have answered the what kind of person chains naked women to pillars, well other than the BDSM people.
Villains would, maybe for their own pleasure or just to taunt the hero. After all for hero to be more heroic the villain must be an absolute monster with no scruples at all.

If you can't envision a scenario like this, you probably wouldn't make a very good or believable villain character.

Winston Smith21 Nov 2016 10:45 p.m. PST

To be honest, Gor IS trash. And so are the "men" who would chain nude helpless women to rocks or pillars.
Does that make me judgmental?

I love the automatic assumptions by the Anti-Outraged Citizens Brigade that I am unaware of Greek mythology.

Dark Fable22 Nov 2016 3:06 a.m. PST

ANYWAY . . .

Dark Fable Miniatures is having a 10 day sale from the 21-30 November with lots of great figures on offer including the Column of Woe. So if your mature enough to handle such a controversial game piece or you just happen to like a bit of nudity, chains and big columns in your games you know where to find them!

I've also decided to knock another quid off the Column of Woe sale price :D

Odd that nobody has mentioned that Red Sonja(with an assist from her Nubian sidekick) is striking a blow for gender equality!

Stepman323 Nov 2016 9:09 a.m. PST

it a cool miniature. Great objective for a game. And as far as it being wrong to like woman chained to rocks, who cares? I'm sure there's plenty of guys on this forum that like to be chained up as well…

Chris Vermont24 Nov 2016 4:03 a.m. PST

Uhm…. I think the general idea there is that A Very Bad Man did that to her, Winston, and Red and Omar there are trying to save her. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this just a generic take on a theme that's more-or-less present in 90% of fantastic literature?

My only complaint is that the artist should have painted a nice tattoo on her somewhere. Say "Property of Hells Angels, Fresno"…

Also, with a bit of modification, that figure could be great neolithic pole dancer.

badger2224 Nov 2016 8:48 p.m. PST

Well, that sale was enough to push me over the edge on this one. Order sent. Love the other minis I already got from them.

Oddly, I can tell the difference between women, and little bits of metal, and can treat both appropriately.

Owen

badger2224 Nov 2016 8:52 p.m. PST

Well that is weird, my order through paypal is pending, due to government regulations. Never had that happen before. When did the US government care about minis? Do they think they may be illegal immigrants?

Come In Nighthawk27 Nov 2016 8:13 a.m. PST

MERELY an observation. "Classicly," aren't the fair (or "bill of fare") maidens chained with their back to the rock or column -- thus adding to their terror when they can see the Kraken (or other monster-thing) coming for them? grin
