I'm confused, which Union Corps attacked Confederate Fort Gregg on April 2 1865? In Osprey's book on Petersburg an illustration show Union VI Corps troops entering the fort, but shouldn't it be the XXIV Corps? How can they make such an obvious error or am I missing something here? |

I am under the impression that 24th Corps launched the assaults on Forts Gregg and Whitworth. I had read that the real controversy was which ANV unit defended Fort Gregg – Lane or Harris, or both, supported by Chew's (?) MD battery or a section of the Washington Art. or both or all of them together….. |

Sixth Corp originally led the assault on Wilcox's division and then started to wheel to their left, after pushing through the ANV lines. 6th Corp was supposed to attack the forts, but Gibbon's 24th was the reserve and they went forward. Sounds like the artist got the first half of the story and not the second ……. |

It's definitely the XXIV Corps. John J. Fox III's book Confederate Alamo is excellent. Also, regarding the Confederate defense of Fort Gregg, they had quite the "second Battle of Fort Gregg" in newspapers and magazines postwar. I wrote a "Part 1" article looking at this war of words on my Petersburg site (there is no part 2, at least yet, in case you are wondering): link |
