F – mu mate getting his 10mm stuff finished.

mashrewba16 Nov 2016 10:36 a.m. PST

If I could get hold of Turks in 28mm I'd fight the Russians in the Balkans. Sooner or later EBay will give me the Foundry stuff I need.
I could use my 1877 Turks as no one else will ever see them…

Weasel16 Nov 2016 10:37 a.m. PST

Absolutely positively and definitely nobody I know is interested.

Jcfrog16 Nov 2016 10:52 a.m. PST

Tactics are much the same as napies, uniform one or two notches down, everyone is under command of morons, as I do napies it would be like doing yet the same.

Garand16 Nov 2016 10:55 a.m. PST

I'd say C. I don't game ANYTHING from this period, as I am generally not interested in either nappies or ACW. But I would definitely consider this. OTOH it also has to compete with the Franco-Prussian war, another period I would do if I had C.

Damon.

Thanks for some very thoughtful responses from the TMP community. I've been considering Crimean War in 15mm for some time, but wanted to hear from others.

I'm interested in Eureka, but unfortunately their range is incomplete and figures are quite pricey. I wish they would offer a discount like Old Glory.

steamingdave4716 Nov 2016 11:52 a.m. PST

B. I actually have the figures (10 mm from MM and Pendraken) but cannot sem to get round to painting them as League of Augsburg and Napoleonics keep getting ahead in the painting queue. Ideal period to play using Fields of Honour.
Can't agree it's just Naps in dreary uniforms; rifled muskets made a significant difference and there were some pretty spectacular uniforms

I've always liked the Crimea, probably due to Errol Flynn and his "Charge of the Light Brigade" movie.

As a result of that I started a huge 15mm collection about 20 years ago using Mini-Fig & Falcon miniatures.

I do believe I have about 2500 figures in this collection.

Currently I'm developing my own rule set using the grid system on a carpet battlefield.

I can certainly see why most people would not go there when it comes to painting their own armies, terrain & rules.

It really only has 4 or 5 large battles to do historically and the conflict lasted about 2+ years.

However since I started and finished all these figures I make sure I game it. Most of the time we do "what if " scenarios, making sure we keep the flavor of the period.

As a result of it I do not own a collection of Napoleonic's probably because I've burned myself out on painting cross belts.

In the 19th century you have Napoleonic, War of 1812, ACW,
Franco Prussian, that have longer periods of engagements, dozens of large historical battles, more books then you could read in 3 lifetimes and beautiful colorful uniforms.
So if you do one of those you really don't need the Crimea to make as another project.

It is a fascinating period with some very interesting reading but for most gamers, just doesn't have enough
"chrome" to spend the money of time to get into.

Not interested enough to do the research. It always struck me as a giant siege. The location also seems to be rather lackluster. I maybe wrong that's just the impression I get. If someone else did all the heavy lifting, then I might show up and participate.

KSmyth16 Nov 2016 5:43 p.m. PST

E. Would love to justify picking up the 18mm figures by Eureka, but I just can't. Would happily play, but I have my irons in way too many fires already.

shelldrake16 Nov 2016 6:48 p.m. PST

I have some 18mm Eureka Crimean war figures, but was hoping they would make some Riflemen to go with the collection so I could do some skirmish games.

It is a very fascinating period and one I would like to do a lot more with.

Mike Target17 Nov 2016 3:37 a.m. PST

Whilst I'm a little interested in it , its a difficult period to enjoy.
The reason for fighing the war had got up and gone before anyone even arrived in the Crimea, and the main reason for carrying on seems to have been "We've come all this way, we probably ought to shoot somebody…"
Thats not really a cause anyone can get behind.

The British strategy doesnt seem to have been well defined at any level, other than to give johnny foreigner a proper going over. The Crimea as a target only seems to have been picked at all because nobody could think of a better one. Its was first suggested by a newspaper, wasnt it? And the powers that be decided to run with it.

Theres no good guy, theres no bad guy. Theres no story! Just a feeble attempt to turn the Russians into the Bogeyman.

The only reason to be interested at all is the huge amount of excessive upperclass incompetence.

Two good films too.

Here's a pic of some Lancashire Games Crimean stuff next to a base of Minifigs 15mm Irish.

picture

Perhaps a good size fit with Eureka? Inexpensive too.

Thanks for the photo. Do the Lancashire infantry packs come with multiple poses, or just a single pose?

Oh Bugger18 Nov 2016 3:49 a.m. PST

A couple of poses per pack from memory.

I didn't know they used longbows in the Crimea.

Oh Bugger18 Nov 2016 4:24 p.m. PST

Dear God man! See a Doctor about your attention span, you seem to have skipped "next to a base of Minifigs 15mm Irish". Its only a 17 word sentence and you've missed 8 of them – a tragic situation to be in. If its a question of money I'll help. God Bless you.

Father Grigori24 Nov 2016 3:04 a.m. PST

I like the idea, but have yet to find opponents. Until I do, and until the lead mountain of C18th armies, galleys and ww2 naval gets at least partially cleared, I don't see myself starting. HFG have an interesting set of lists, with each army having some fairly distinct characteristics.

One day…

I love the period, I have 1300+ all minifigs painted toy soldier glossy old school. When I started this 10 years ago, it was just a side lark. But after some further reading, the stereotype of minič rifles vs percussion can muskets (Russians) just doesn't really hold up. The 4th British were still using smoothbores, as were the French line infantry (for the last time I believe), as were the Turks as well. When considering the conflict, it's good to remember the Turks, not as a side item to your allied army, but as a viable independent force that would and did combat the Russians outside of the Crimean peninsula.
As far as scenarios I seem to follow the old fashioned idea of "kit busting" battles from other conflicts. I use a LOT of ACW actions as inspiration for battles. I have even done a bathtub Gettysburg (Russians defending the federal positions) with the allies broken down into 2 corps, British and French/Turk. It was a blood bath. The French player formed 2 brigades of infantry to punch thru the Russian line at Kladbishchenskaya Gryada, (cemetery ridge кладбищенская гряда).
It failed~~~
Battle field looked beautiful but void of most of the trees 🌲, with some light woods. Wish I had pictures.
Now I have aspirations to add 2 more cavalry regiments, 21 infantry battalions and 7 batteries. That should cover it. 🥴
