Great looking figure. I know it's fantasy, but if the hammer was half the size it is, it would look more realistic to me. |

Why a hammer? What happened to his spear, Gungnir? |

Weird paint scheme – highlight areas are dark and shadow areas are light! |

It would be interesting to learn the rationale for that--as it is,looks like somebody rubbed him all over with carbon paper or something. |

Perhaps because skin tends to be slightly oily and mildly reflective( look at pictures of actual bare bodies) without really creating deep shadows. Painting miniatures is about creating an optical illusion of realism by simulating light play on surfaces that are reduced in scale to much to look real. for very small figures we like to use dramatically unrealistic light play to make the details stand out and look pleasing to the eye. Otherwise we could just paint them in straight colors without highlighting or shadowing and let natural light play off the surfaces of the sculpture. Not so dramatic an effect, I can assure you :) I can see what the artist was trying to achieve with the figure above, but for my eye the contrasts are to stark and the skin does indeed look like it has soot rubbed on it in places. Nice brushwork buy old overall effect. |
