MW 404

I've tried for the last month to get an advertising account here on TMP for Miniature Wargames but sadly I've failed…

So – in the mean time – the next issue is at the printers and this is what you can expect!

Issue 404 of Miniature Wargames

FORWARD OBSERVER
What's on the horizon in historical gaming. The Editor takes a look at Early War Miniatures, Fireforge, Brigade Micro ‘Nam plus Plastic Soldier Company releases.

SEND THREE AND FOURPENCE
This month Conrad is pushing his comfort zone and trying something new: The fog of war in a pub via a gin and tonic…

JUTLAND
Martin Pike gave us the DBFPFA system in the last issue: this time, it's war! Play out the fleet action with part 2 of the WWI Naval rules.

CHICAGO WAY
Brian Cameron sends one to the morgue: running booze and making scenery the Chicago Way, plus a scenario for this popular system.

GRID BASED WARGAMING
Why are you off grid? David Burden talks us through his thought processes in the first of a two part piece on gaming without a ruler.

ABOUT BONAPARTE
Dirk Donvil, from Denderleeuw in Belgium rekindled his childhood love for larger scale Napoleonic toy soldiers by creating a rule set for 54mm games.

CRITICAL HITS
This month: Fantasy Facts with the monthly round up of what's new in non-historical gaming – the Editor takes a squint at Konflikt '47, new SF releases from GZG, Coppermine and Brigade, plus gives a once over for Forgotten Pacts, Broken Legions, Arkeo Obskura and Rogue Stars; there's an introduction to 7TV2 by the creators with a unique scenario and exclusive playing card; there's more 7TV goodness with a campaign system by Nick Hughes; plus an interview with the crew at 4Ground with a peek at what's coming next.

COMPETITION
Your chance to win Sid Meier's CivilizationVI – three copies worth £49.99 GBP each are up for grabs.

RECCE
There's a big splash on in depth reviews of what to read and why for wargamers.

That is a busy cover! The "Grid Based Wargaming" article looks very interesting.

The 54mm and Grid articles both tick boxes for me – nice to see something not based around the latest rules systems.

Will be picking this one up

thanks

Mike

John,

Chris got you good!

John, the reference is to internet error code 404 – Page not found.

Ahhhh – always with the humour!

I guess we should have skipped straight to issue 405 wink

Makes me think of the days when hi-rise buildings would decide to not have a 13th floor.

A curse on the houses of all numerologists: may they be beset by geeks wink

Dear Mr John Treadaway

Good luck with this great opportunity as editor.

I use to look forward to your reviews in Practical Wargamer and I have always thought highly of your work.

I loved the work that Henry did but this is your turn and best wishes from down under.

For what it is worth, I thank you both for many years of good hobby reading

Ty

In college, my room number was 1313. No lie. grin I survived.

Chinese superstition is that 4 is evil, so older buildings in Hong Kong are often missing 4 and 14, sometimes as well as 13!

Chinese superstition is that 4 is evil…

404 is right out then… wink

I like that the magazine is the product of all of us. And a good article (which yours is) deserves to go to the dance in its best bib and tucker.

Glad you liked it!

Actually I thought this was a pretty 'meh' issue. Absolutely nothing that was directly interesting to me – which I don't expect every month. The most interesting articles were on grid based gaming and Jutland but there was too much on skirmish gaming. The rest of the magazine seemed to be mostly adverts or product reviews (or in the case of 7TV both at once). The 'review' of SELWG probably had a place in a wargames mag twenty years ago but these days you can find this kind of thing with better pics on blogs within a few hours.

Oh and you reviewed the Fireforge archers without actually seeing them in the flesh. Once you did you would realise that Fireforge have recycled the bodies from the men at arms box with new arms. Which is why the poses are a bit wonky.

I do hope things improve or I won't be renewing my subscription.
