Last year we started allowing the public to hire their own table and sell their own items in the bring and buy room rather than put them on the bring and buy.

This was a success. We have 2 tables available on the sunday this year for £30.00 GBP each. The saturday tables are taken.

You can set up from 10:30am and have until 3pm to sell anything you like (within reason)

As you have paid the £30.00 GBP you pay no commission on what you sell.

I realise time is now rather short so can I ask you to contact me ASAP if interested in taking one of the sunday tables

I can be contacted at
"warfare at watkins-family dot co dot uk"

Thanks

Andy

You could consider for future years hiring them by the hour – that way the costs are spread, and a punter doesn't have to spend all day running his stall (surely that makes them a "trader").

The problem with selling them by the hour is twofold .
a) The setup and take down time (even if it is only 15 minutes each -that adds 30 mins .)
b) its easier for the organizers to have the table sold for the whole time and not have to worry about filling the unsold spots .
Observations based upon the selling of tables at US conventions

I imagine that the difference between the 2 is more than just the hours .

We were actually supposed to be selling them for 2 hour slots but it got messy and I have just given up and given them for the day.

Considering they were supposed to be £30.00 GBP a table for 2 hours and it has ended up as £30.00 GBP a table for the day it is a bargain.

Next year we will quite probably leave it as all day but increase the fee to at least £40.00 GBP

To be honest I am not a fan of these flea market stands, particularly as they cause me a lot of hassle and bring in very little money :)

I have noticed over here that they generally are more trouble than they are worth – and the quality of items drops. In a lot of cases it looks like leftovers from a bad garage sale .

Do not know about the British Bring and Buy (US Flea Market) but I have made many purchases over the years. What is popular in year X falls out of favor in year X + 5 and can be purchased to fill in a collection. This is how I picked up a 1/1200 BB Arizona and a whole SciFi Entomolian space fleet for example.

As I understand it the bring and buys are different than a flea market .
From what I remember from cons in Britain(from 15 + years ago) a bring and Buy is run by the club and the prices are all marked with no lowballing (oopps "negotiating").
whereas the US flea market style is all about lowballing .

How many times I have heard gamers say proudly " I never pay what the price tag says "

Ah yes,
In the UK generally the price on the ticket is what you have to pay.

IF the seller has left a phone number and said he is open to offers then we can call them and negotiate but this is the exception not the rule

In the flea market the seller is doing the selling so yes it is up to them to haggle.

I am certainly going to try and scrap the flea market stalls next year, they are driving me nuts! and make the club virtually nothing!!
