SESSION 51: KING IRONTOOTH

ROUND 3B – SOUTHERN RISE

• Georg was wounded for the first time in the last round of combat and must take a morale check. He needs to roll s 7+ to pass but he rolls a 1 and flees.
• Lothar looks with incredulity at the coward and only just restrains himself from taking an attack of opportunity as the deserter runs by him. He shouts at Luki to attack the kobolds and rolls a 4. The hound looks at him, not understanding his masters command. "Attack Luki, Attack!!!" repeats Lothar using his second action. This time he rolls a 17 and Luki starts to run.
• Luki has a base movement of 40ft and has the distance to charge the kobold bodyguard, which he duly does. He snaps at the kobold with but he misses.
• Trone charges the kobold bodyguard to his front but also misses.

picture

ROUND 4A – DEEP WOUNDS

• The northern bodyguard drops its bow and swings at Luki with its long sword but misses.
• The southern bodyguard stabs at Trone with its long sword and hits him in the left thigh. The wound goes deep and Trone takes 6pts of damage.
• One of the females 5ft steps to the front and attacks 1-3 Luki, 4-6 Trone, d6 = 2 = Luki. She stabs at the guard dog with her spear but misses.

picture

ROUND 4B – THE SHARP POINT

• Georg continues to flee past Luther and Lamarr.
• Trone slashes at the bodyguard with his longsword but misses.
• Luki snarls and snaps at the northern bodyguard and also misses.
• Lothar double moves up to support Trone and Luki.

picture

ROUND 5A – GRIEVOUS HARM

• The southern most bodyguard stabs at Trone with its long sword and just misses.
• The northern most bodyguard slashes at Luki and critically hits the dog. It is a horrid blow with the tip of the sword penetrating Luki's snout and dealing 8pts of damage. It is the first time that Luki has been wounded in combat and like the men at arms he will need to take a morale check in the next round.
• The female continues her attack on Luki, stabbing at him with her spear and she hits him also in the face almost gouging out his eye and dealing 2pts of damage.

picture

ROUND 5B – CHOICES

• Luki has been wounded for the first time last round and will need to take a morale check similar to a retainer except that should he fail he will cower behind his master rather than run off and also that he will only need to test the first time he is wounded rather than upon the death of comrades (thanks to Mardaddy for input to these rules). His morale will be tested against a DC 10 Handle Animal plus the handlers Handle Animal skill as a modifier. So Luki will need to roll a DC 10 – 3 skill for Lothar = 7 or more. A 20 is rolled and Luki will stay in the fight.
• Lothar is torn as to what to do. Luki and Trone are both badly wounded but he knows he can draw on the power of Asmodeus to think out the kobold ranks. He decides to use the later strategy hoping that he can rescue Luki and Trone in the following rounds. He Channels Negative Energy and uses Selective Energy to save Luki and Trone from the damaging effects. It's a DC 13 Will save and each of the females and the bodyguards has a Will save modifier of -1 and the King has a Will save modifier of 0. The five females save as follows 9, 10, 10, 11, 16, the two bodyguards 17, 13 and the King 16 and they take 6 or 3pts respectively. Four of the five females are instantly slain and the remaining female, two guards and the King are wounded accordingly.
• Trone lashes out at the bodyguard but misses the wily kobold.
• And similarly Luki doesn't hit his opposite bodyguard.

picture

ROUND 6A – INCENSED

• The kobolds have lost more than 50% casualties and must test against the Kings leadership of 8. They roll 7 and will fight on.
• The northern bodyguard attacks Luki but misses.
• The southern bodyguard attacks Trone and critically hits him in the chest. The kobolds longsword penetrates a weak point in Trone's armour, digs deep into his flesh piecing his lung, causing massive trauma and dealing 12pts of damage. Trone cries out and slumps to the ground unconscious and starts to bleed out.
• Incensed that his harem has been decimated Irontooth pushes his last mate into the front rank. She stabs and Luki and hits the canine in the right leg for 3pts of damage. Whilst it doesn't drop the invading beast it is enough to almost put it down.

picture

ROUND 6B – WITHDRAWAL

• Trone checks to see if he stops bleeding. It's a base DC 10 + Con modifier of +2 – current wounds of -5 = 13. He rolls a 15 and stabilises.
• Luki isn't intelligent enough to realise that continued exertion will cause him to start bleeding and lose consciousness and he attacks the bodyguard, misses and starts to bleed taking 1pt of damage and becoming unconscious.
• Lothar calls for Tedrick to come to his aid. He then 5ft steps forward and grabs Trone by his shoulder straps and starts to pull him back at a half speed of 10ft.
• "Sod this" thinks Tedrick I'm not doing this by myself and he calls out to Lamarr to run forward as he does himself. Lightly armoured, he moves forward 60ft to start to cover Lothar's retreat.
• Lamarr runs to try to catch up with Tedrick. As he rounds the corner he is shocked to see Tedrick running toward some really really big kobolds whilst Lothar is pulling Trone's prostrate body away from the enemy.
• Luther sits, wagging his tail, blissfully unaware.

picture

ROUND 7A – IRONTOOTH'S MORNING STAR

• Yipping excitedly with the opportunity for victory the southern bodyguard 5ft steps forward and attacks Tedrick with its longsword but he misses the plucky guard.
• The little female steps over the prone, bleeding body of Luki and also attacks Tedrick but also misses.
• Frustrated King Irontooth runs forward, bypassing his bodyguard and accepting the attack of opportunity from Tedrick, to surround and flank the man. Tedrick stabs at Irontooth but misses the great King. Irontooth lashes out at the foolish, flanked invader with his mighty morning star, clipping him in the left leg and causing 8pts of damage.
• The remaining bodyguard steps around the female into an attacking position south of Tedrick and attacks the human and hits him in the side of the neck for a further 5pts of damage. Tedrick grabs the open wound spurting blood from his neck as he collapses to the ground and starts to bleed out.

picture

ROUND 7B – NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF

• Luki rolls to see if he stabilises. He needs a DC 10 +1 for current wounds – 2 for Con = 9. He rolls a 10 and stabilises. Tedrick rolls to see if he stabilises. He needs a DC 10 + 1 for current wounds – 1 for Con = 10 and rolls a 6 and bleeds out another point.
• Lothar knows that the warlord is the biggest threat. He 5ft steps back and cases Cause Fear. It's a DC 12 Will save and Irontooth has a Will save modifier of +0. He rolls a 16 and passes and becomes Shaken for 1 round.
• Lamarr charges Irontooth but he fails to hit.

picture

ROUND 8A – GRAVE OUTCOMES

• The Shaken Irontooth swings his morning star at Lamarr and misses the courageous guard.
• The western most bodyguard decides to accept the attack of opportunity from Lamarr to close on Lothar and possibly to surround Lamarr next round. He Charges forward and as he does Lamarr stabs at him but misses. The bodyguard stabs at Lothar and the force of his Charge just enables him to penetrate Lothars new chain mail armour, hitting the warrior of Asmodeus in the face and causing 4pts of damage.
• The next bodyguard moves forward 10ft and lunges at Lamarr and hits the human in the right leg for 7pts of damage.
• The little female gets a bit excited in all the commotion and attempts to flank in behind Lamarr and will accept the attack of opportunity from Lothar in the process. Lothar swings wildly with his heavy mace, desperate to not let Lamarr get surrounded. He smashes the kobold in the right shoulder as she passes buy and does 4pts of damage. It's enough and the female drops dead.

picture

ROUND 8B – EVIL TIDINGS

• The Shaken token is removed from Irontooth.
• Tedrick rolls to see if he stabilises. He needs a DC 10 + 2 for wounds – 1 for Con = 11 and rolls a 9 and bleeds out another point.
• This is the first time that Lamarr has been wounded in this combat and he needs to roll a 7 or more to pass morale. He rolls a 20 and easily passes.
• It's desperate. They need to cut down their opponents combat ability. Lothar looks to the sky and Channels Negative Energy. He saves Lamarr and Trone from the damage but Tedrick and Luki will take the full effects. It's a DC 13 attack and the two bodyguards have no modifiers to the save and roll a 9 and an 11 and Irontooth has a -1 Will save and rolls a 9. All three fail and suffer 1pt of damage (that could have been better). Luki and Tedrick also take a point of damage and Luki starts to bleed out again.
• Lamarr stabs at the most wounded bodyguard, trying to reduce their numbers but he misses.

picture

ROUND 9A – AND THEN THERE WAS ONE

• The western most kobold 5ft steps to the north west, getting a flanking position on Lamarr. Stabbing at the guard he hits him in the left leg for 4pts of damage. Lamarr drops to the ground and starts to bleed out.
• The remaining kobold bodyguard 5ft steps to the west and slashes at Lothar but misses.
• King Irontooth decides that again he'll accept and attack of opportunity to try to block the remaining humans escape and flank him at the same time. He moves around the cleric to a flanking position. Lothar swings with his heavy mace and hits Irontooth in the left thigh for 10pts of damage. It's not enough to drop the King though and Irontooth attacks Lothar back but cannot hit the cleric.

picture

ROUND 9B – ASMODEUSS LAST STING

• Lamarr rolls to stabilises needing a DC 10 + 2 for wounds – 1 for Con = 11 and rolls a 12 and stabilises. Tedrick need a 13 and rolls a 12 and bleeds out another point. Luki needs a 10 and rolls a 17 and stabilises.
• Lothar's got good armour but he's out numbered and outflanked. He's only got two choices run (ie use a Withdrawal move) and try to get to Luther or chance his hand with his remaining combat abilities. Despite being evil he cannot abandon his friend and he chooses to fight on. He 5ft steps to the north east and Channels Negative Energy for the last time today. He chooses to preserve Trone and Luki. The two bodyguards roll 2 and 20, one passing and one failing and the King rolls 1 and also fails. They take 4 and 2pts respectively. The King is badly wounded from the attack and is Staggered and on 0 hit points and will start to bleed out and die if he attempts anything besides a move action.

picture

ROUND 10A – CORNERED

• Irontooth is horrified at the concept of his own mortality. He makes an immediate move action towards the southern corridor and he moves 30ft to the west. As he approaches the corner he spots Luther who immediately starts to snarl and growl at him.
• The southern bodyguard 5ft steps to the north east, flanks Lothar and attacks him with his long sword but misses.
• The remaining bodyguard stabs at Lothars back and also misses.

picture

ROUND 10B – REVENGE

• Lamarr rolls to stabilise needing a 15 and rolls a 4 and bleeds out another point. Tedrick needs an 18 and rolls a 10 and bleeds out another point.
• Lothar 5ft steps to the south east and swings at the kobold to his north and hits him with his heavy mace on the crown of the head. The weapons caves in his puny reptilian skull dealing 9pts of damage.

picture

ROUND 11A – INDECISION

• Irontooth doesn't know what to do. If he advances on the massive guard dog blocking his way he's pretty sure he's dead. He'll wait to see if his last remaining bodyguard can kill the remaining human.
• The remaining body guard 5ft steps to the south east and attacks Lothar and misses.

picture

ROUND 11B – THE BLOOD, THERE IS SO MUCH BLOOD

• Lamarr roles to stabilise. Needing a 16 he roles a 12 and bleeds out another point. Tedrick needs a 19 and rolls a 5 and bleeds out another point.
• Lothar 5ft steps to the east and casts Cure Light Wounds from a scroll, healing Luki back 8pts. Luki wakes up and growls. He'll default to a Guard mode and will protect his master.
• Luther grows at the big kobold, almost willing it to come towards him.

picture

ROUND 12A – A GOOD INVESTMENT

• Irontooth looks over at his shoulder hoping his faithful servant will prevail.
• The bodyguard 5ft steps to the east and slashes at Lothar but the deadly sword thrust just cannot penetrate the new chain mail armour.

picture

ROUND 12B – SAVAGED

• Lamarr tries to stabilise. He need a 17 and rolls a 5 and bleeds out another point. Tedrick needs a 20 and rolls a 15 and bleeds out another point and dies.
• Luki 5ft steps to the east and attacks his masters assailant and savages him, biting him on the left leg, dealing 4pts of damage. The kobold is Staggered and on 0 hit points and Luki follows up by attempting to Trip the kobold. It has a CMB 0 against a CMD 10 and Luki rolls a 9 and the kobold is lucky not to be tripped.
• Lothar doesn't take any chances. He 5ft steps to the east and casts Burning Hands. The kobold needs a DC 12 Reflex save and rolls an 18 taking ½ damage of 5 / 2 rounded down = 2 points. It's enough to kill the kobold. Trone takes 5pts of damage and starts to bleed out.

picture

THE LAST OF THE COMBAT

• Lamarr rolls to stabilise needing an 18 and rolling a 6 he bleeds out another point.
• Trone rolls to stabilise need in an 18 and rolling a 5 and bleeds out another point.
• Lothar casts Cure Light Wounds upon Trone from a scroll and heals him back by 8pts. Stablishing him in the process and talking him back to -2hp.
• Lamarr rolls to stabilise needing a 19 and rolling a 14 he bleeds out another point and now on -11.
• Lothar rushes to his side and casts Stabilise and stops the bleeding. If he had gotten to -12 he would have died.
• Lothar then orders Luki to attack and finish King Irontooth. The big hound growls, charges Irontooth and rips him to pieces.

Lothar casts Cure Light Wounds upon Trone and heals back 9pts bringing the warrior back to consciousness and onto 7 hit points. He has one scroll left. Using it won't get Lamarr back up so he decides to keep it for a last ditch emergency.

Trone and Lothar quickly cut the ears from the kobolds and loot their bodies. They find 38gp and a great gem on a golden chain around King Irontooth's neck. The kobold bodyguards and the King are armoured and carrying small and serviceable weapons which may be sold at The Iron Shoe to Fenton. Trone and Lothar discuss Tedrick's and Lamarr's fate. They quickly dismiss the concept of trying to recover Tedrick's body as it would be practically impossible with Lamarr also being unconscious. If they take Lamarr back they won't be able to take back any of the armour or weapons to be sold to Fenton. None the less, they decide to take Lamarr back, not for moral reasons but rather for the selfish reason that they want to preserve their reputations as much as possible. And also Lamarr has shown some faith and might be a valuable convert to Asmodeus.

Slinging their weapons and shields they leave Lamarr's equipment where it lays and they hoist the guard between them and start to trudge back to the Keep.

As they leave the kobold cave they turn towards the path and walk into the rain. They quickly become soaked, cold and miserable, struggling to walk straight under the heavy burden of carrying their unconscious companion.

Following the path leading to the woods they notice Georg's shield and spear on the ground. "The filthy coward hasn't even bothered to recover his own equipment" Lothar thinks to himself.

They keep going and after a few hours they approach the Keep, relieved that they weren't attacked on the way back.

In their short but bloody foray the party have dispatched 2 giant crabs, 13 male kobolds, 5 female kobolds, 3 bodyguard kobolds and King Irontooth. They've collected 22 sets of ears, 41gp and a large gem set on a gold chain. Trone has a potion of Cure Light Wounds (which I'd forgotten about until I just checked his inventory) and Lothar has one scroll of cure light wounds left. They are pretty beat up with Lamarr on -11hp, Lothar on 6hp, Trone on 7hp, Luki on 6hp and Luther on 13hp. They have earned a total of 4,200xp. 1,680 each for Trone and Lothar and 840 for Lamarr. Trone and Lothar now have 1,515 + 1,680 = 3,195xp each and Lamarr started off a base of 0 and so has 840xp total.

Ouch ouch ouchie! Man those critical hits can be rough Trone came very close to the great black beyond that time around!

With their king dead, I doubt the Kobolds will be much resistance in the future (he says crossing his fingers for luck). Maybe we shoudl get healed up, grab a few new recruits and head back ASAP so we can hit them while they're off balance.

Dark Eyed Warrior 69a14 Nov 2016 1:39 p.m. PST

Yeah that was definitely a close one. When you got criticalled and went down I was having a little freak out. In fact I thought it was all over at about turn 8 or so when Lothar was missed by the narrowest of margins and there would have been a high likelihood of him going unconscious. It proves the point that you should always upgrade your armour.

I'll get some focus back into the other party now for a bit but Trone and Lothar will go up to level 2 now so you might want to think about how you'd want to level and send me an email.

Whilst it's tempting to go straight back I'm not sure that Lothar would want to do it without leveling first (albeit I take your point about hitting them before they are able to reorganise).

P.S. Having two parties adds a fair bit of flavour but it does split the attention between the two groups and there are some real negatives with that too. If we had have TPK'd I would have suggested to you to develop a 'good' or 'neutral' character and join the other party. But anyway I'll pile 1/2 a dozen or so sessions into the 'good/neutral' party next.

Mardaddy14 Nov 2016 2:30 p.m. PST

Wow that was a near thing… Still, two forays and leveled up. Cannot say I don't envy the small party in that regard.

PMC31714 Nov 2016 3:14 p.m. PST

Eech! The blood! BRάTAL.

Echoco14 Nov 2016 5:03 p.m. PST

Brutal fight.
That negative Energy cluster bomb really came in handy.

Darkest Star Games Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Nov 2016 8:14 a.m. PST

Heck ya it did. Think I'll start calling it The Bacon Saver!

You're totally right DEW, Didn't realize w had leveled. Woot! Of course, now the monsters get larger and nastier…
Might be a good time to get those MW weapons made too. Or maybe a MW breast plate or chainmail?
