I'm having a hard to time figuring out the distinctions between Redcoat uniforms of the two periods. And were turnbacks "standardized" for the Brits by 1740?

I'm looking toward 28mm, so can't blow off more obvious distinctions as one might with smaller scales.

Can anyone provide any wisdom on the matter?

There are as many differences and in 28mm they would be easily apparent

I think that first pic is WSS rather than WAS.

Turnbacks were pretty much standard, but the tails could be unhooked in inclement weather. Have a look at the 1742 clothing warrant, which at least sets the rules (actual observance might be different).
One key difference I think was the wearing of the waitbelt which originally was outside the coat to inside the coat by the SYW. Liley there are other minor differences, for instance the cut of the coat may have been less generous by the SYW.

Yes, if that first guy is WAS, I am good to go with The WSS Brits I already have, which would be very convenient!

Now, I didn't catch that detail- thank you.

First guy looks more like WSS than WAS (particularly with an AR on his box) to me. Crann Tara is the only out fit I've come across that markets figures (28mm) as WAS. Check out their site.

First guy is almost certainly WSS, I think its a reconstruction by Tony Barton. As AICUSV points out the cartridgebox dates him to Queen Anne, though other features like the simple cuffs, no lapels, and loose hair are also characteristic of that era.

Have a look at Front Rank's Jacobite rebellion and SYW British infantry, you can see they are different but they are very similar, perhaps officer's wig styles are the one detail that jumps out, the others kinda blend in. Depends onhow pernickity you are.

Sorry I made a mistake in reading as I saw WAS as WSS – senior's moment -or why it can be dangerous using acronyms

Basically the cut of the coat is tightened up slightly; Lace is more elaborate; not a great deal of difference on a 25/28mm fig. Most of the differences can be done with paint rather than putty or carving.

As highlighted the major difference that is visible in 28mm is the wearing of the waist belt, as has been said over the coat during the WAS and under for the SYW . The unhooking of the turnbacks was common through the WAS as that was the only coat the phi had.
