This replaces a previous thread that strayed into strange tydes and acrimony where it should not have gone.

I am not now nor probably ever have been a true way of life SF gamer.

Alex of shipyards new soon to be published set of starship battle rules, seems like it is a way of life game. It is a system that really is designed for folk like him who want to create their own races, starships and then possibly even world's to invade.
This is not a pick up type of game (although you could use his exsisting fleet designs but then miss out on much of the fun). To get the best you need to be creative and dillegent to put it all in place. This could even spread to designing your own starship models. This is definitely a way of life, it could take hundreds of hours to weave the creative threads of a universe into a picture. This is a long way from a game like mine that uses real world training manuals and accounts as a base. In this you have to create you own, potentially alien technology first.

So the question is are you a way of life gamer? By this token I am not. I do not create world's, nay universe(s) as a starting point. The background for my games are not set against some imagined race and it's way of life (" I may not be life as we think it Jim").

P's. if you need a definition of way of life, I think Alex has starship quality's measured in 4 figures

Hmmmm. Full time career, family, other hobbies. Nope, just a gamer

I am not currently, but at times in the past I have been.

There is a distinct charm to delving deep into a single game, learning every intricacy and building up a massive "experience" around it.

My interests shifted over time, but I don't regret doing it when we did it.

Lately, I've been looking to refocus my fantasy gaming towards just doing Middle Earth, which might qualify?

It sounds like you are talking about blending a role playing type experience with conventional tabletop gaming to create an immersive experience.

The closest I think I've come to that was with the Traveller universe, where my RPG activities could feed the tabletop gaming. Did that with a project a few years back in which I created a 'scenario guide' to battles of the Fifth Frontier War on a single planet. Got in the weeds with different government types, troops and environmental effects.

Since then, much more of a gamer, what with work, family and what not getting in the way.
