I've read in a few publications that the "gutting" of corpes was a practice done by the Zulu to let out the spirits of the dead. I expect the drummerboys having been killed in the action would be subject to the same treatment. The stringing up tales were possibly added in the re-telling of stories of the sights of aftermath on the battle field |

I believe there were slaughtered bullocks that had been hung up by the cooks etc before the battle started. Its generally thought that when Chelmsfords column came back through the camp that night these were misidentified as drummer boys… |
