And forgive me for the delay in posting the standard "Walt Report". A tree fell on my house right before attending, and then when I got back, there was a moron in chief to elect. These things happen. In any event, I just KNOW you all have been waiting on the edge of your seats, here it is: LINK: link Less pictures, I admit-- I only did one full day up there. Great show! Thanks to Dan M. and his jolly crew of Jack Tars for this convention! V/R Walt and thanks for your time! |

Better glue will hold that flocking in place… :) |

Thanks. Nice report. If I might suggest something, though--Lancaster is near the eastern limit for the Midwestern gamers. A program of one convention in Lancaster, one in Fredericksburg and one EVEN FURTHER AWAY in New Jersey--well, it would switch me to one a year, and if you think the Garden State is a stretch for you, Little Wars is five hours from me minimum, and an hour of that in Chicago traffic. I don't mind north so much--a little north might even help--but do they have to keep dragging the conventions closer to the Atlantic? Maybe a west (Lancaster) a south (Fredericksburg) and a north (somewhere near the old Valley Forge site?) Someone on the BOD or the convention directors might want to go through past convention registrations checking states and/or zip codes against the various locations to see what the trade-offs are. (Tell me they at least saved the data!) Oh. And next time pick a tree with a broad base, and leave a weight on it until the glue completely dries. |

One of the very smart dealers from the south pointed out that if CW were held at the FCC and if there were even a little bit of snow it would be near disaster. He righlty pointed out that there is only one snow plow and salt truck in the entire state of VA. :-) All kidding aside, even a light snow in the DC area is usually an apocalyptic disaster and it often snows in this region during March, especially early March. In fact, we often have our heaviest snows in March. |

The period from about February 15th thru March 25 is the peak time for snow throughout Virginia. The last three years we've had some amount of snow on the ground during that period. While we DO have plenty of Snow Plows to keep the Interstates and Main Highways opened everywhere else we have to wait till it melts! So when it does snow everything can be shut down for days as almost no one can get out of their drive ways! |

I hadn't thought about the possible snow issue…. I live in the snow capitol of the US so I am so used to driving in 4 feet I forget that folks cannot handle a "dusting"…… hahahahaha… no, sorry. I do get it. For those not accustomed it can be terrifying and dangerous… especially when dealing with someone who is driving like 60 and wondering why no one else is moving at all. Safety first folks! |

To say that I spanked Walt is an understatement. He sailed in guns ablazin', talking trash and generally taking great glee in my upcoming demise. Premature talk from a wannabe Dutchman. I rained some hurt down on from all quarters. As always Walt I enjoyed gaming with you and look forward to it again in the future. Great report shipmate. |

Jesus, I would kill a boatload of puppies for fall in to be in NJ. A BOATLOAD, I tell you! |

NJ would be much easier for us Canadians coming from Quebec and Ontario, not to mention those gamers that come all the way from Michigan every year. Has anyone looked into a mid Pennsylvania location that might be more central for HMGS East? |

Thanks for the report, Walt. Sorry about the tree. I (and other HMGS members) have had similar experiences. Now I know why you looked so dazed when I saw you in the flea market. Speaking of the flea market, as a long time seller, I suggest you try the Sat. morning session next time, especially if you can only do one session. That session catches the most day trippers at Fall In and Cold Wars. Be advised that Sat. morning always sells out of tables, so get your request in early. (For Historicon, I prefer Thursday and Sat. morning.) You can also take advantage of free tables on Sunday. There must have been over 40 sellers on Sunday at Fall In, along with plenty of buyers. I actually did most of my flea market buying on Sunday. Since you got hit with the "Triple Whammy"--tree falling on house, election results not to your (and 56 million other voting Americans) liking and move of Historicon to NJ--I'll cut you some slack on the "HMGS politics" portion of your report. Suffice it to say that I have no evidence of any "conflict of interest conspiracy theory" regarding the new owners of the Host and the move of Historicon to NJ. What I do have are the attendance numbers for H'con 2016 and Fall In 2016, as supplied by HMGS: 2336 vs. 1830. As you can see, the gap is closing. Some may think it doesn't matter. The current BOD obviously disagrees. If you want to talk about the geographic make up of the current BOD as being composed of members north of DC, it's only fair to point out the southern connections (DC, VA, MD) of at least four of the then HMGS BOD members who voted to move Historicon to VA years ago. A two year move became a four year deal, then five, now six, with a proposed three year extension from 2017 to 2020. Given the decline in attendance at Historicon and the shrinking gap between Historicon attendance and Fall In attendance, the current BOD voted (I suspect by a large margin, since all but one of the original pro-VA BOD members are now gone from the Board) to try something different (NJ) to reverse the trend. Finally, the Historicon contract with NJ is JUST FOR ONE YEAR. If the Northerners were part of a conspiracy, they would have signed a ten year deal with penalty clauses on cancellation to tie the hands of future BODs. They didn't. I hope you will consider attending in NJ in 2018. I look forward to reading your AAR of Historicon in NJ. Until then, I'll enjoy your other AARs of the HMGS conventions. |
