Looking for some advice on what period best fits the Pirate Age for Colonial troops – British, French and Spanish. I am not looking to build armies – but to have a 'governmental presence' so I am looking for variety in figures and not the stamped out regimental all troops firing or marching look. Which is the best time period – WSS/Marlboro of SYW? Any recommendations as to manufacturers with variety/personalization/animated look in figures? Thanks |

Old Glory has these guys in their Pirates range: link And here's a pic from their Marlburian range: link Both of these ranges,as it happens, are not packaged in line with the regular OG practice, but come in smaller sets--10-15 figures. |

The answer to your question depends on which 'age' of piracy you want to focus on. If you want to focus on the 'Golden Age of Piracy' of roughly 17116-1726, then WSS would likely be your best bet. But if you are more interested in the Buccaneers (of roughly 1650-1680) then ECW/TYW types would be more appropriate. And if you are motivated by Hollywood, then throw out the history books and go with whatever looks right to you! |

Thanks – somehow I missed these guys. I am a little confused though – someone recently told me that the Old Glory Pirate Line was 28mm – yet recently I bought a vignette and the figures were all small – 25mm for sure – Are the Old Glory Pirates really 28mm? I would want them to blend in with my foundry figures. |

Thanks Will – Golden Age will do it. And thank you Hafen for the figures I missed |

Someone else will have to speak to compatibility with Foundry. OG have been around for a while now. Some of their ranges do vary in size--the French Wars of Religion infantry are very large, for instance. Were the figures in the vignette from the Pirates range? |

Yes, was pirates gambling |

I have OG and Foundry pirates. Size-wise they blend very well. Both ranges are 28mm. For pirate gaming the Golden Age (circa 1700 to 1730) is the better option because most actions were actually, in military and wargame terms, skirmishes, and because you have a much wider choice of infantry figures from all the Marlburian ranges in production. For the buccaneer era there's less variety available in 'government' troops. If you change your mind though, look at North Star's 1672 range and the Dixon and Warfare Miniatures Grand Alliance ranges. |

My Pirate collection includes Foundry, Old Glory 25s, Perry, Reaper, Front Rank, West Wind, Blue Moon, Eureka, and probably a couple others that aren't jumping to mind at the moment. You can see them together in a diorama-style layout at warin15mm.com/Pirates.html |

Old Glory has a range of pirates in their usual multi-figure packs, and they are 25mm. (OGP01-35) link They also have a selection of individual 'Pirate of the Month' figures originally given as a bonus with 'Old Glory Army' memberships. They are characters, etc. and are 28mm. (OGPS01-12) link |

Hafen, badger22, and Daystar, thank you for the kind words… the Pirates were a wonderful project/my first efforts at 25mm/28mm. If you look a pic 21 of my Pirates (a tavern scene) you will see figures by the following manufacturers side by side: Reaper, West Wind, Foundry, Eureka, Old Glory, and 2 of the Old Glory "Pirate of the Month" figures. To my eye they work well together in terms of look and size. Once again, check picture 21 on at warin15mm.com/Pirates.html |
