Hi,

a few background points first. I am a skirmish level gamer through and through. When the figure count I have to control starts to hit double figures I start to get worried.

For a while now I've been wanting explore this all from a 15mm standpoint. I know it goes on, but my internet searching provides few good leads.

So to help me keep going, and maybe also encourage others, I'm diving into the mirky waters of running a second blog, dedicated to 15mm Skirmish and documenting my journey (and adventures) from pretty much the very start.

To make life easy for myself I've titled the blog "15mm Skirmish": 15mmskirmish.blogspot.co.uk

I hope you might find something of interest there, or give me a few pearls of wisdom as I go on.

My other blog (Weeblokes) will continue to be as unfocused as usual :)

cheers,

AK

I am looking at the same thing myself- having been sucked into the prevailing mantra of skirmish requiring 28mm gargoyles I recently played a game in 15mm and both myself and all the players were knocked out by the effect in 15mm.

arabianknight10 Nov 2016 4:23 a.m. PST

That's my limited experience as well. Coming from "the usual" 28mm, I was expecting it to be "the same but smaller". But I felt there is some more to it, movement ranges, the scale of the game (not referring to figure size) seemed grander.

Also being a bit of a multi genre flibbertigibbet the lower costs and prep time also make me excited!!

Yesthatphil10 Nov 2016 4:54 a.m. PST

15mm is certainly a very effective scale thumbs up!

So is 6mm. It is all about what your goals are. For me, I can do a skirmish game at night on a 2'x2' or a 30"x20".

No, tweezers are not involved! :^D

I have Pendraken's 10mm dungeon, so have played smaller than the projected 15mm. Don't know "when" I'll go to 6mm though Dale :)

The ease and swiftness of setup is refreshing though.

Welcome to 15mm first off.

Pearls for scifi:

1. Pretty much the miniatures are manufacturer compatible.
1.a. Slight scale creep occured starting several years ago.

2. All the companies are pretty much one or two man enterprises.
2.a. For the most part they all are very friendly with each other.
2.b. Tons of companies making miniatures.

3. The community is spread out but we love our scale and it feels small.

4. Lots of rule sets to choose from that go near future…to high scifi.

5. It's a more realistic scale for combined arms over 28mm.

I would check out Khurasan miniatures, ground zero games, ion age, and brigade models…they are some of the biggest companies….but by no means even scratches the surface as to what's out there.

I play alien squad leader 2.0, gruntz, and tomorrow's war. I've played necromunda in 15mm and it's a blast. Haven't played hammers or some of the others.

Terrain I would check out gamecraft miniatures and mad mecha guy….but they are two of tons.

Welcome again….anyone who enters this beloved scale is welcome in my eye….ill check out your blog.

arabianknight10 Nov 2016 8:54 a.m. PST

Thanks for that, T.C.

A few pointers are very welcome, especially with the Sci-Fi. I'll be sure to fine comb through your suggestions! :)

boggler10 Nov 2016 10:08 a.m. PST

That tickles my fancy..definitely take a look!

Looks good AK ,
Welcome to 15mm.
15mm is definitely the way to go,I would also recommend Armies Army & Critical Mass (UK) & Clear Horizon (US).All 3 give great service like the ones Twoball mentioned.

I like your terrain , especially the ground piece.
Dave Graffam has great ground sets also.

Enjoy

Cheers for the pointers, zrunelord. All good.

I'd totally forgotten that I'd played a game of Critical Mass @ Claymore in Edinburgh a couple of years ago as well. (Obviously got my ass handed to me by my young son – as usual!)

I have a few Graffam ground sets, which is why I went with his textures with my board. In fact just took delivery of his latest Spaceport mat on a 3'x2' printed banner. Looks great for 15mm (or 28mm dare I say!)

Weasel10 Nov 2016 1:14 p.m. PST

15mm scifi is wonderful because its complete chaos.

Pick 8 manufacturers you like, grab an old robot from a 28mm range you don't even remember any more, buy terrain from 3 different places, hack together an unholy mess of rules consisting of parts from FUBAR, No Stars in Sight and Stargrunt and go!

It's wonderful and easily one of the most exciting scale/period combinations in gaming right now.

Twoball Cane10 Nov 2016 2:30 p.m. PST

True weasel.

I forgot khurasan minis has a lot of historical minis too.

Weasel10 Nov 2016 4:09 p.m. PST

And the odd historical, painted appropriately, can end up in all manner of scifi scenarios :-)

Arabian Knight – What can I say --- Finally!

;-)

arabianknight11 Nov 2016 2:31 a.m. PST

@Weasel: That sort confirms what I see on the forums then – it's just not me! It's does make entry a little bit daunting, but 15mm Sci-Fi still had that flow of toys and scratch building that was the norm in the 80s, so what's not to love? (and why I blagged a heap of Thunderbird toys from a charity shop in the summer :)

@Jimboba: Well all that nagging finally works. Just don't tell my wife ;)

Weasel11 Nov 2016 8:39 p.m. PST

Arabian – Definitely.

There's big enough ranges now that picking a single set of rules and one manufacturer is possible but I think it's also fantastically open to hte kit bashing and "old schooL" spirit.

A lot of MDF terrain too nowadays.

zrunelord12 Nov 2016 2:47 a.m. PST

Forgot to add Rebel minis & Micropanzer ( both US ) and if you're feeling particularly adventurous converting Copplestone's (UK) Picts or Barbarians to post Apok gangs would be excellent.

I've been collecting 1/72 plastics for a homebrew dungeon crawl and perhaps some modified Frostgrave.

There are now lots of fantasy sets from Caesar Miniatures and Dark Alliance/Red Box; plus tons of ancient and medievals to be repurposed.

Jimboba10 Dec 2016 9:24 a.m. PST

Arabianknight – as this isn't FB I can't stalk you here as I can there so I missed your wife wip above.

Tell her – less cost, less storage, less time painting – she should be delighted! Unless of course it's 15mm IN ADDITION to 28mm. he he.

And we both know the truth of that.
