"There's a reason every service member and veteran knows what a KA-BAR is. Anytime American troops deploy, they're sure to bring a few effects from home: A photo or two of loved ones, a hard drive of porn, enough cigarettes or dip to make their lungs and gums raw for a year, and of course, a knife. Often, one knife in particular: a KA-BAR. The KA-BAR has an almost cult-like following in the military. The company's knives are steeped in legend, from stories of soldiers and Marines taking out enemies in brutal close-quarters combat, to urban myths about the steel being so strong that wooden shipping crates were sent with KA-BARs instead of crowbars during World War II…"

Huh. We always used Gerbers and Leatherman multi-tools. Ka-Bars were more of a 'Nam jarhead thing. Smells like a knife company sponsored the article. |

I still have my K-Bar. I think they have always been more closely associated with the USMC. As far as the perfect hand to hand military weapon, nothing better then the half opened entrencting tool!! Regards Russ Dunaway |

I carried a Gerber multitool and Phrobis field knife (civilian version of the M9 bayonet) on my LBE and a Leatherman on my belt during my Army time. The Ka-Bar, at the time, had to be threaded onto and off the pistol belt, versus the clip-on scabbard of the Phrobis, and I hated having to dismember my LBE every time I needed to take my personal knife off to make room for my bayonet. |

I have a K-Bar at home. You should always have a good knife. |

I am not now nor ever was a Marine (I love my brothers in arms who were), however I carried a K-Bar whenever it was not forbidden. It was and is a solid knife that is big enough without being too big. I still carry it today whenever I am in the woods, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, etc. I also usually have a Leatherman or a Swiss, as well as a folding lock blade. Each knife has a purpose and set of tasks it is best for, however there is enough overlap that if one gets lost or broken I have backup. The only thing I would prefer to see the K-Bar change is a sheath closer to the Air force survival knife, with its extra protection and sharpening stone. |

Have just finished 'With the Old Breed.' In it the author states that kabars were it insofar as he and the Marines he served with in the Pacific were concerned. Perfect close quarter weapon in their experience. |
