The Pavia Regiment of Dragoons sees the fourth of the five cavalry regiments completed in the Spanish 2nd Cavalry Division at Talavera.
Not only that but the regiment forms part of another landmark for the blog as being the 500th post since it got going back in December 2012. Spanish cavalry can prove a real challenge to the Napoleonic wargamer in more ways than one. So if you would like to know more then just follow the link to JJ's. link Jonathan |

The link shows even better work. Real works of art, congratulations. The casual browser is bound to ask two questions though and, so often, they are not immediately answered. Even today, 4th November, several other posters have ignored what is so obvious. What scale? Who made them? Now I have only rarely…..and recently……worked in 18mm and with AB figures…but I can recognise them instantly. OK, they are unmistakable. But it is only fair to give the makers a plug when showing work this good. They need our help and appreciation. Promise I am not giving you grief. (Other than asking did Spanish Trumpeters ride greys? Indeed did anyone other than French do so? Confess I have no idea!) No one, it is not you, seems to remember to do this. Message to all? |

Hi dh thanks for the comment and you raise some good points that I have noticed as well. If the casual browser wants to know all the questions you have posed then I take the time to make sure every post I do carries just that sort of information. For example the second paragraph above the picture attached in this post states the following. "My Pavia Dragoon Regiment are composed of figures from AB supplied by Fighting 15s and are the fourth regiment completed as part of 2nd Cavalry Division." In addition all the sources I have referred to are listed at the bottom of the post to aid those who would like to do their own research. Please take the time to check out other units on the blog and you will see that I have quite a regular format that hopefully covers the points you raise All the manufacturers I use, I endorse and are not only referenced in every post but are listed in the side bar for ready reference and I have posted an explanation piece at the top of the blog to enable quick navigation to all units that have featured in the past. I agree that it is important to recognise the manufacturers involved as it only helps support our hobby which is why I make the effort to do exactly that. Several of them carry pictures of the work I have done to help emphasise their products, which I am very happy should happen. With regard to trumpeters and greys. As with everything to do with what was planned and what actually occurred they are two different things. I could not reference that information but frankly if the regiment needed a trumpeter and the only mount available was a chesnut, then so be it. I choose for the purposes of 'artistic licence' to have grey mounts unless I have a definite reference to an alternative and given my previous point even then you wouldn't be wrong whatever colour was chosen. Thanks for raising this but I would also mention that despite highlighting the scale, manufacturers and references included in a given post you might be surprised at the number of enquiries I get as to what make of figure, scale or references I have used to produce the look of the unit featured. |

Apologies. I read this and read this and thought…"no he did not" Then tonight I indeed saw, cut and pasted; "My Pavia Dragoon Regiment are composed of figures from AB supplied by Fighting 15s and are the fourth regiment completed as part of 2nd Cavalry Division." Head in hands…groan. So I might maybe, just have slightly, marginally, wronged you…..just a bit……I might even have got it totally wrong! Humble Pie here! I will fall back on again saying that I always thought they are absolutely superb work…and instantly recognisable, even to a 28mm'er like me. Must thank you for taking it with good grace. Some would have been far more aggressive when challenged unjustly. |

Hey dh, no problem. I really think you raise a good point and one well worth emphasising. If I keep you guessing as to what scale these chaps are I might even persuade you to join in the delights of 18mm rather than those giant table hogging 28mm leviathans you're into. Cheers JJ |

@JJ – really nice work! @deadhead – Two of the Uniform Plates by the Suhr Brothers showing Romana's Division (1807 – 1808) have a trumpeter of the Villaviciosa regiment riding greys.
And the reputable historian/artist José María Bueno shows the trumpeter of the Pavia dragoons on a grey.
So while I don't believe that ALL Spanish trumpeters rode greys, at least some did. I wouldn't worry about the horse colour, but if I wanted to be picky, perhaps the trumpeter's saddlecloth should be red edged white rather than yellow. PS if you are interested in the Spanish army, check out my notes on my web site… link |
