Today marks the anniversary of the worst defeat of an American military force at the hands of the American Indians. Called St. Clair's Defeat or the Battle of the Wabash, it is a central piece to the Miami Campaign of 1790-95 that ended with the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the signing of the Greene Ville Treaty. Harmar, St. Clair, and Wayne…oh my!

And tomorrow I will be attending a tour and symposium about this interesting battle!

And the scalped heads looked like a field "of steaming pumpkins". Ahhh. When you get to the parking meter where they think our own General Butler died, pause for me. Truly overlooked and, indeed, a fascinating battle. Should have changed Little Turtle to Big Turtle after that one. H

Wow, it was the cause of the Whiskey Rebellion, the Militia Act, the first Congressional investigation of the Executive Branch, the Cabinet, and the principle of Executive Privilege. This battle was a defining moment in US politics.

Where is the symposium at? I stopped by the Ft. Recovery Museum and grounds last month, but I did not see anything posted about a tour and symposium…

It is being held at the Nazarene church complex near the monument. The deadline for joining has long passed, but if you reach out to them tonight they might have room?

Hank – We should walk right by Butler's location, so I will hold a moment of silence. Butler County of course is named after him (but you probably knew that!).

The Wabash is one heck of a battle…far less one-sided than most think it to be, and most of the troops fought decently well considering their lack of service time, training, and being supplied for combat.

Well, dang….I live in Butler County….I really ought to go up there soon. Thanks for the idea!

LL – I lead tours as a side job and can show you some sites along the way from BC to FR. Small little markers to parks, there are several places to visit the remaining sites of the Miami Campaign.

Here is a map of some of the sites:

I am working on a tour guide (which at the pace I move will take another five years) which is why you see restaurants and breweries also on the map.

This is an extended map, showing related sites beyond Ohio:
