"From the archives of the Old West, we've culled a list of the most notorious places on the frontier. Here's our countdown of the baddest of the bad, meanest of the mean, Wild West towns. Some historians say that the Wild West wasn't as dangerous as we've been led to believe by Hollywood, but there's no doubt that some frontier towns were beyond the immediate reach of the law -places where mischief, mayhem, and murder were everyday occurrences…"

Yeah, right. Dodge City – annual average homicide rate AT THE HEIGHT OF ITS REPUTATION: .6

How big was the population in some of the towns is the real question. It's common for books/movies/etc. to state that murder rates were higher than many places today. That may well be the case if a town had five murders with a population of 250. That would be much higher than say 1000 murders in a city of 250,000 people today (nearly 5x higher percentage).

I don't picture Old West towns as dens of murdering bandits…but simply that life in the Old West was freakin' dangerous in general. Indians, thieves, bandits, disease, wildlife, starvation, dehydration, etc. It also begs the question – how many poor souls were killed/murdered and never discovered. Having worked law enforcement in Arizona…the desert is still an extremely attractive place for criminals. In the desert between, say, Tucson and Phoenix…it's crime 24/7.

That last town, Diablo Canyon, AZ, that sounded pretty bad alright. First law officer to put on a badge did so at 3 PM and was dead by 8 PM, next five lawmen didn't even last out a full month.
Yikes!
