Ugh. As much as I love 'weird west' tales, articles like this just show the author's stupidity. Almost all these stories are drawn from newspaper accounts at the time. The thing is, most newspapers of the era regularly published wild hoaxes to entertain readers. (Mark Twain, during his days as a newspaperman, was known as a particularly inventive creator of these tales.) Most readers of the time knew they were hoaxes and got the joke. It is only in the modern age -- when IQs seemed to have plummeted -- that people go back and read these articles and not realize they were never intended to be taken seriously. |
