I have just completed this army of Sassanids, manufactured by Aventine Miniatures. They are wonderful castings, and I've also put a few details of my new basing style on this post.

Excellent work on these Sassanids. Finally someone has cloth barded horses! New bases set them off very well. I do like the large base for the infantry spears – Aventine have some wonderful sculpts.

Must get some of those infantry spears and bows with 'generic' helmets or even bare headed as tribesmen for any number of ancient armies.

Always had a thing for Sassanids, and those are just dandy.

Those sheilds, in particular, are spectacular.

Thank you, can't claim credit for the shields, that goes to Steve at LBMS

Ah but you can claim credit for using them so well that they work perfectly with everything else that you have done. They look superb.

Definitely agree with the comment on the decals – I have seen some poor results when the person doesn't get it right. It can seriously detract from otherwise fine paintwork.

Those look very good!!

Thanks, on the decals, I have finally nailed how to apply them to curved (convex ) shields. AVOID fixing the shield to the figure until the following procedure is complete:
1. Paint the front of the shield a solid white and leave it until it is completely dry
2. Cut the transfer out keeping exactly to the lines and peel off the clear plastic
3. Alp ply the transfer dead centre to the shield and wet the white backing paper with water. Wait a good minut until you can see through the backing paper
4. (This bit is key) DO NOT PEEL OFF THE PAPER. put your thumb on the white paper and twist the paper round, using the wet paper to press the shield transfer down flat on the curved shield. Now remove the paper.
5. No creases! Great fior hoplite shields etc.

Fantastic painting and colour choice. Great contrast with the basing.

Good points about transfers.

I apply a coat of gloss varnish to the shield after the white is dry, leave for at least 12 hours before applying the transfers. For domed shields I also lightly score the transfer's back.

Getting the transfer dead centre is not easy (at least for me!). Any 'tricks' you can suggest other then eyeball Mk II?
