"During the Winter War of 1939, the Soviet Union invaded its north-western neighbor, Finland. The population stood together in self-defence. Among them were Finnish Jews, who joined the ranks with no questions asked. Most of them were descendants of Russian Jews who lived in Finland – or Karelia, as it was called during the rule of the Russian Empire. As Finland and Russia had a long history of conflict, the Jews were considered untrustworthy due to their origin. Finland officially declared independence from Russia in 1917, and these men found themselves in a crossfire. A civil war started immediately after the declaration of independence between Finland's own "Reds" and "Whites" ¯ communists and nationalists…"

My understanding was that the WW2 German Kriegsmarine refused to dismiss serving Jewish crew so potentially Jewish men actually served in the German military. History is never as black and white as you'd think is it. |

One also has to remember that the general public in Germany was not fully aware of what was actually going on. Depending on location there were German military, including SS, that had no real idea either. |

Unless you lived near one of the death camps, you may really not have known. Those who did know about the murders of the Jews, Gypsies (etc. the list is incredible) generally knew better than to talk about it in public. Those who knew and weren't in a position of authority also kept generally quiet about it out of fear – you know, the most powerful motivator… |

The number of German civilians who didnt know what the Nazis were up to, when you consider slave labor, German race baiting, indeed, the use of the transportation system to move Jews and others to the disadvantage of war aims, to include east front tales of savage treatment of Sov POW. is very small.
But as, for example, the officer corp, selling its soul through that oath to Hitler, and the nation, knowingly allowing Hitler to become dictator, the Germans were expecting something else?! |
