Turns out, the significant other is a big fan, had no idea, until Halloween, the other night, where would one start?to get on board, I haven't bought comics (I am sure that is not the term), since "commando" in the 80's. Would rather not look like the ignoramus, I am, whilst getting into her hidden hobby.

The Mad Love Trade Paperback has her origins but it is in the style of the animated series, where she first appeared,

Going to Amazon will show you the 6 issue reprints of her own series, the Suicide Squad where she is pretty prominent.

hi

Go with trade paperback ( compilation of different stories) over buying comics

Mad Love is the best Harley Quinn story, truly capturing her character as originally conceived. Also good (if you can find them) are the Batman Adventures annuals and issues that feature her (often in a "girl's outing" with Poison Ivy).

Another vote for Mad Love.
I bought it when it first came out in '95 in Maidstone.
SWMBO cried in shock when she saw the price "….FOR A COMIC????" and stormed out of the shop.
Well, it was MY money, so I bought it anyway.
Later SWMBO read it and has been an absolute fan since. Copied the cover art onto her tent, dolls, tie etc. Even copied the red Diamonds onto our wedding cake.
Lucky for some I stuck to my convictions, eh?

Mad Love indeed!

Then there are collections from the 90's with the first one called Harley Quinn 1: Preludes and Knock Knock Jokes.

The current material is also collected and the first GN is called Harley Quinn 1: Hot in the City
