Weasel once said:

…the [BattleTech] points system is an insane nightmare.

Do you agree?

Deeman29 Oct 2016 12:47 p.m. PST

No. IT may not be perfect, what points system is, but it works well enough for getting forces together for a game. Insane nightmare is hyperbole.

I should clarify I was referring to calculating points values for a mech of your own design.

The process is..arcane to say the least.

If you use pre-built mechs, they already have their values assigned and its just pick and play.

Last time I played it was just choose a weight and away you go.

Weasel29 Oct 2016 3:12 p.m. PST

We did it by weight in high school too. Not perfect but it'll get a game going okay.

The Battle Value system used a lot of arcane formulae, but repeated the tonnage value so many times that it correlated pretty highly with raw tonnage, give or take 25% (but normally closer to 10) or so for equipment. I don't think that anyone at FASA was very good at math.

The original BPV formula worked OK for Inner Sphere v Inner Sphere or Clan v Clan fights. It came unglued for Sphere v Clan fights, Clan tech is significantly lighter than Sphere stuff. I'd put a 50-ton Clan Mech up against a 75-ton Sphere mech any day of the week.

yes it is

The battle point system is fine. It has been tinkered with for 30 years and has been retooled at least three times.

It is as close to balanced as you are going to find.

In the context of calculating the points for a custom design, then yes I'd agree that the system is maths intense and the results do not correlate well with the actual effectiveness of the design e.g. it's possible to design a high points monster that's ineffective and a low point mech that is a murder-death-killing machine.

My résumé is the Clan second line mechs of the 3050 TRO.
