I'm looking for a model of a streamline moderne-style locomotive, probably HO scale or so: N would probably work, and I'm fine with non-train scales. I'm looking for something for a conversion, so it doesn't have to be in an exact scale. Plastic or resin kit is fine. I've found some beautiful model locomotives, but they run $1,400 USD or so! Not going to slice one apart at that price. Of course, model railroad hobbyists want high-quality electric motors, beautifully painted, and all the bells and whistles (literally). I'd be repainting, so … Any ideas on where to look for something like this? Anyone know the best model railroad forum for this sort of heretical question? Thanks!

Last year Target stores had a toy train somewhere between N and O that was similar to your second engine. Very sleek and Art Deco but too British for any of my projects. |

You can buy unpowered model locomotives including the Mallard. They were sold by Dagostini or Amermedia I think as the Great British Locomotives partwork. Iirc they were only 10 quid or so and were OO scale. |

Yeah, most of the locomotive kits you find online will be powered versions. I'd hit up Willlucv's suggestion of the Great British Locomotives collection. link |

They might be too foreign looking if you want a US type locomotive but I imagine you get them individually off ebay |

The OP actually included a very British locomotive as one of his two examples – it was Cory who didn't like the British look. |

I'd recommend the all electric GG-1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRR_GG1
"At some point, PRR hired famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy to "enhance the GG1's aesthetics." For steam engines look at a streamlined ALCO Hudson (Empire State Express). It was the epitome of the modern art deco streamlined steam engine. The Mallard is also an excellent choice. Captures the same art deco feel but melds it with British engineering ethos. The Royal Blue was a streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific which is also worth a look. |

Bachmann sell a couple for the 250-350USD range. The best thing about the magazine collectables is that they were so awful, you shouldn't have a care in the world about your custom job. Other than that, check on Ebay for derelict lots. |

Thanks, everyone! The Great British Locomotives seem to be the best choice, since definitely don't want to spend a lot of money on something I'm cgoing to chop up! It may be smaller than I'd like, but we'll see. The real problem is that no one seems to be selling them here in the States and I'm guessing that shipping will be expensive. To add insult to injury, the prices have skyrocketed to ovver 20 GBP. :( I believe that this is the type of locomotive that I was trying to post second (that came out as "Image" in the post):
And a montage of beautiful streamline moderne transportation designs:
