I just purchased a can of dark Army Painter. The side of the can suggests that it leaves a glossy finish. Is that what others have found? Don't want shiny figures. :)

Standard. Everyone has to matte coat later.

Use the Army Painter Acrylic Tones, available in Strong, Dark and Soft, the Soft is best for most things, dries matt and being acrylic does not smell. It comes in small dropper bottles.

Use the stuff in the can for painting your shed.

Agree on the dropper bottles
The soft shsade works very well and gives a good shading, the others I feel are too dark and if applied too libraly usually over do the effect

I use both the dip and shade inks from Army Painter. I wouldn't say the dip leaves a gloss finish but – when applied – it's certainly not matt. More a patchy, semi gloss (or silk) unlike the inks which are as matt as the paint you put them over.

The inks smell hardly at all (no more than acrylic paint does). The dip smells of varnish but no worse than the Testors Dullkote I spray over it to matt it off (and the thought of using unvarnished figures makes me shudder!) so – use it in a well ventilated area and neither are a problem.

The advantage of the dip is speed and cost. Sure its twenty something quid but that's for a quarter litre (as I recall): the small bottles of ink work out a little more expensive in the long run.

But I do use both (under varnish) and both are – IMHO – excellent.

Check my article in issue 403 of Miniature Wargames for an article in which they feature or look at gallery examples on hammers-slammers.com

Or make your own Magic Wash using Pledge Future acrylic floor polish and your own choice of pigments. Costs about £3.00 GBP for a litre, enough to last 20 years!

I use that as well (see tje references I gave earlier).

Future/Pledge and ink's great for some things (and will definately leave a glossy finish!) but I believe they all give different results although they all have their place (in my box of tricks, at least).

Yes, it's a gloss finish. Then you spray with Army Painter anti-shine matt varnish.
